Recruiting Report: Trey Hutcheson (2019)
A Division I prospect, 6-foot-5 Linn-Mar wing Trey Hutcheson is having an outstanding offseason and could soon be racking up some offers.
There’s been some lukewarm interest so far from a couple Midwest D1s, and with his nice size and newfangled ability to shoot the ball, that interest could soon swell.
“I got an invite to the North Dakota camp this summer, from Jeff Horner. Last week I called Drake and talked to Ali Farokhmanesh for awhile, that was good,” said Hutcheson.
“My coaches and the (Linn-Mar) athletic director have told me that UNI has called, South Dakota State has called, so it’s a good early start with all that.”
The Iowa Barnstormers product cites his shooting as an aspect of his game that has improved the most. And now has as well-rounded of a game as most anyone in Iowa’s 2019 class.
“I feel like I’ve seen the most improvement with my shooting, when I was younger I could always get to the rim, but my jumper wasn’t always super consistent. Now that I’ve gotten that a lot more consistent, people have to guard me out there and it just opens up driving lanes a lot more,” said Hutcheson.
“I’m working a lot more on my ball-handling, just to get it and go, and just having a better feel for the ball, so I can make plays for myself and my teammates.”
Last season as a junior with the Lions, Hutcheson — Iowa’s 9th-ranked 2019 — averaged 15.8 points per game and shot 44 percent from deep. He connected on 87 percent of his free-throws for good measure.
“I thought I had a really good end to the season. At the start of the year I was timid still and wasn’t really fulfilling the role that I was supposed to fill,” said Hutcheson.
“Next season (as a junior) I’ll be the guy who everybody looks to when we need a stop, when we need a rebound, when we need a basket, all that kind of stuff.”
This summer will be a critical one for sharpshooting 2019, and he’ll be one of the headliners on adidas-sponsored Iowa Barnstormers 16U.
“I’ve been playing with that team since I was in fifth-grade, me and Patrick McCaffery have been the only guys on the team that long, so we’re looked at as the leaders to carry on the culture part of it,” he said.
“On the court, my job is to play really good defense, take shots when I’m open, create for others, make good use for my minutes, rebound, and just not be afraid to shoot the ball.”
He added: “Our goal is to win games, and then the coaches will recognize those teams’ players because obviously they’re good if they’re winning games. So, as a team, our goal is win the Gauntlet Finale for adidas.”
“And other that that I just want to keep getting recognized, keep showing people what I can do, and keep playing.”
