Recruiting Report: Maurice Commander (2018)
Marist 2018 point guard Maurice Commander is coming off an outstanding junior campaign which saw him win player of the year in his conference and lead Marist to a monster season. The lefty lead guard is shifty and quick with the ball in his hands. Has the ability to break his man down off the bounce as well as work in the pick and roll game. Streaky shooter from three, but is quite effective pulling up from mid-range. Big time leadership qualities and everything he does is crisp and with a purpose. Commander is a low-major/D2 prospect.
He broke down his monster junior campaign with Marist.
“At Marist we did really good as a team and had one of the best seasons in a long time. We had some great accomplishments. We won the Centralia Holiday Tournament and haven’t done that in about 20 years. We won the conference. For me I was the player of year in our conference and got honorable mention for a lot of the big awards. I had a great year and as a team we had a great year.”
Where did he see the biggest growth in his game?
“Being a point guard and a floor general. Making sure my teammates get the ball where they need to have it. Basically just being a floor general. I improved on my jump shot from freshman and sophomore seasons. I improved on my percentages. I am still working on that.”
Commander spoke about his strengths as a prospect.
“I think playing in the pick and roll. I know I am a short guard, but I still see the floor. Even if it is the roll guy I am able to kick it. Being a leader on the floor. Being able to get all my teammates involved is my biggest strength for the next level.”
The Young & Reckless 17U point guard updated his recruitment.
“I got an offer from Chicago State. I have Furman looking at me heavy. Navy, Western Illinois, and a lot of mid-major and low-major schools are looking at me. Hopefully in the summer I will get some more offers. I am definitely going to take a Furman visit soon. Probably in June. I want to visit Drake and Valpo in June.”
