Recruiting Report: Julius Brown (2018)
Julius Brown’s (2018) breakout spring has been the direct result of dedication.
During our recent interview, the 5’10” Westerville North point guard was able to give us insight to his recent success, by bringing us behind the scenes of his work ethic.
“I’m working out basically every day. Sometimes two times a day … Hard work pays off. So I know that when I’m in the gym, I know I tend to play good. I’ve been in the gym and working, so I expect to play good,” Brown said.
The emerging prospect is hoping to build upon his performances with All Ohio Black by remaining consistent. As he said, that will become the case as he stays in the gym every day.
All of this has resulted in a surge in recruitment. Brown ran through his list of schools, adding that all of the following programs have expressed their interest starting these past few months.
“I have a lot of D-III interest. But there’s some D-IIs. I know there’s Northern Illinois, they’ve been contacting my parents. Northern Kentucky and Mississippi State a little bit. Fairmont [State] and some schools,” Brown said. He went on to mention that most schools have been contacting his coaches or parents.
As far as Division III programs, Brown mentioned that Otterbein, University of Northwestern Ohio, and Ohio Wesleyan appear extremely interested.
Brown’s options will continue presenting themselves as he performs over the next year. He broke down what will separate some programs from the pack.
“I like the fast tempo, pushing the ball in transition … I mean, I can play half-court, but I like it better in transition,” Brown said.
His thoughts on the tempo are interesting, especially if you’ve seen him play this spring. For example, in an upset against Indy Heat 2018 at the Bill Hensley Run n Slam, Brown milked the clock late by slowing down the tempo and weaving double-teams. So while, as mentioned, he does prefer the fast pace, Brown understands time and score also.
“My jump shot is one of my biggest strengths, and my defense. I’m able to get my teammates involved in the game, I think — I’m good at driving and kicking, finding the open guy. Running the floor, finding the tempo,” Brown said.
Even with this variety of talents, Brown is hoping to add a few more facets to his game.
Particularly, Brown is working on finishing ability, including a floater. Additionally, Brown would like to utilize his left-hand more during game situations.
Brown currently carries a 2.6 GPA and a 17 ACT. The ACT will be re-taken, as he’s taking ACT lessons and such to improve the score going forward.
Expect a senior season full of intrigue for Brown, as he will surely be tracked closely throughout the final campaign with Westerville North.
