Recruiting Report: Jake Phipps (2018)
Anoka/Minnesota Fury center Jake Phipps stands 6-foot-9 or 6-foot-10 in the post and his developing game is earning interest from several college programs.
Jake put up double figure numbers for Anoka this year and the consistent team on the floor for a struggling team allowed him to grow.
“One thing that made me grow as a player was that we got a new coach this year Jeff Wall and I had to adapt to a new coaching style and how intense the practices and games were this year compared to last year,” Jake told Prep Hoops.
“I could take away from this past season was that I feel like I could play against anyone in the state and how nothing came easy and how I had to put in work to be who I am now.”
Phipps put the work in and he’s continuing to put the work in this of-season.
“I hope that I can progress on my outside game more as well as my ball handling because with our offense I’m out on the perimeter just as much as I am down inside,” Jake said.
“On the defensive end I hope I can keep working at being at the right place all the time rather then just standing straight up and not being in help side when I’m needed.”
Phipps plays for the Fury Wilde squad that is 26-6 on the season playing in the three SPTS events as well as the Comets Shootout, the Pitt Jam Fest, and the Midwest Live event in Iowa.
“There’s a ton of great competition at this level and playing with these guys on the Fury really helps my game a ton,” Jake said.
“The competition that we face from all over the country is a challenge and I have learned that every team you play you need to come out strong and not judge anyone cause at this level anyone can beat you if you don’t try your hardest 100 percent.”
At Jake’s size and with his post game developing several schools are calling.
“Southwest Minnesota State has been reaching out lately, they would like me to come up in June some time,” Jake said.
“Also, Valley City State University has recently reached out to me, I’ve gotten a couple of letters from Sioux Falls here and there and I had a visit with them last year, and Minnesota-Crookston has been talking to me for a while and I visited them last year as well.’
“Concordia St. Paul recently gave me a call around 1-2 weeks ago, I’ve gotten some letters from Northern State as well here and there.”
