Recruiting Report: Garrett Pumphrey (2018)
The Indiana Legends AAU squad is off to a fast start to their spring and a lot of their production is coming from 6’8 center Garret Pumphrey. He can defend the rim and block shots with his length along with grabbing as many rebounds as the coach allows him to. Pumphrey is still working on the offensive side of the ball but it is coming along nicely and once it reaches the level of his defense, he could be unstoppable.
Pumphrey has visited Ferris State and Manchester thus far and will soon visit Marian. Pumphrey is looking to turn heads this summer and make an impact on the recruiting scene. There are a few things that Pumphrey is looking for in a future school.
“I think I’m going to school for physical therapy or athletic training. I’m not too picky about the location. I’m looking for a big school spirit kind of school. I want a team that can also be family.”
This past high school year playing for Cambridge City Lincoln, Pumphrey had a fantastic year. He averaged 17.5 points a game as well as 13.5 rebounds. Pumphrey also averaged an astonishing 6.6 blocks a game.
“(It) went pretty well. We finished fourteen and eight. Got knocked out first round of sectionals.”
Over the past year, Pumphrey felt that the biggest thing that he improved on was his scoring ability and this summer he is working on getting stronger and rebounding. Once he gets stronger he will be able to score more effectively on the low block and will be able to even increase his rebounding numbers.
Some of Pumphrey’s strengths are his athleticism, his ability to block shots, and his defense. These three things are tough to teach and Pumphrey has all three, along with height. Once these things come together you could be looking at a very special player.
