Recruiting Report: Gabe Kalscheur (2018)
DeLaSalle/Howard Pulley shooting guard Gabe Kalscheur is coming off two of the best months of his career helping the Panthers to a 7-1 EYBL record this month and recently winning yet another state title.
Kalscheur is averaging 17.2 points per game shooting 49 plus percent from the arc (30 of 61) and 48.8 percent from the floor overall (41 of 84). Add in the 16 of 22 percent shooting at the foul line and he’s been one of the more dangerous EYBL win weapons.
Gabe is in the top 25 in scoring of the EYBL so far this spring and is sixth in three point shooting percentage.
“I would say our defense and our ability to score in transition is a big reason for the way we are playing,” Gabe said of the Pulley Panther 7-1 start. “We are an uptempo team that likes to play fast. Score points that way, play lockdown defense, and that will get wins for you.”
Kalscheur plays with five star point guard Tre Jones and Gopher committed Daniel Oturu among others on a very talented team. The talent of the group is something that Gabe feels has helped push him to such a great April.
“I would say the people around me,” Klascheur said about the reason for his strong start. “Tre Jones pushing the ball ahead, that helped me a lot this past weekend. I think me being aggressive looking for my shot has also helped. I’ve stayed aggressive but also Daniel Oturu, Jarvis Thomas, and others playing well also is important.
“Our goal is to make the Peach Jam. We are really close to qualifying for the Peach Jam if we keep working.”
Gabe’s junior season included another state title (six in a row for his school) and averages of 17.5 points, 2.6 assists, 2.2 steals, and 5.6 rebounds a game. The 6-foot-4 Kalschuer also shot 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from the arc this season.
“What made this year’s state tournament different was doing it with Goanar Mar one last time. This is Goanar’s last year at DeLaSalle and I played with him the last two years and that time was incredible.”
Kalscheur lives in Edina, Minnesota so the hometown Gopher program has been strongly aware of his abilities since an early age. Gabe was offered about a year ago by Minnesota (about 11 months ago actually) and the Gophers continue to heavily pursue him.
“The Gopher season was really strong,” Gabe said. “They started strong and they ended strong. That is what I was looking at them to do, to start strong and end strong and they did (making the NCAA Tournament despite few expecting them to). That season really opened up my eyes as a good program and a good offer as a place for me to go.”
Kalscheur also has offers from Northern Iowa and North Dakota plus he visited Arkansas last fall. Kalscheur has been by the University of Minnesota several times including games over the winter. Another school calling is from the Ivy League.
“I’ve been hearing a lot from Princeton, and hopefully I hear more from schools this week,” Gabe said.
Kalscheur plans to evaluate all options going forward in the coming months.
“I recently talked to my family about it and we thought that after AAU is over we will make some visits and make a decision.”
