Prospect Spotlight: Sheadon Byrd (2019)
Gonzaga Prep’s 6-foot-2 shooting guard, Sheadon Byrd, is progressing into one of Washington’s best young guards, and currently checks in at No.35 in the 2019 rankings.
A pass-first guard who is working to develop his jumper, Byrd defined to PHWA what his current set of skills consist of.
“I’m very good on fast break and with passing and finding the open man, and defense is definitely one of my strengths too,” said Byrd.
“I need to work on my shooting a bit more, and my ball-handling.”
As a sophomore with the Bullpups, Byrd says his role was to come off the bench and be a grit guy.
“I thought I played alright, I was more of a dirty work kind of guy this season — a hustle player. I started a couple games, but was mostly the sixth-man,” said Byrd.
Now, he’s into what will be a very important offseason for him, both in terms of skill development and exposure.
He’s playing up a grade level this spring and summer with Eastern Washington Elite’s 17U squad.
“I’m just a scorer on that team. I play up because it’s better competition, and when I play up against older guys it makes me elevate my game too,” said Byrd, who’s hoping to see some spike in his recruitment this summer.
“I’ve had a little interest from Portland and Montana, but not really much. I’m hoping that picks up this summer.”
Another main priority is to prepare himself for what will be a much larger role with Gonzaga Prep next season as a junior.
“I’m just trying to look for my opportunities next year,” said Byrd. “I’ll have more of a main role, and I’m going to look for my opportunities to stand out.”
