Prospect Spotlight: Mach Nyaw (2019)
After averaging 12 points per game as a sophomore with 1A state champion Grand View Christian, 5-foot-11 guard Mach Nyaw is on to new grassroots ventures for his 16U season.
In the past he played with Kingdom Hoops, but this spring and summer he’s playing with brand new program, Beyond Ball.
“The guys we’re working with put a lot of time in with us, and it’s more than just basketball; we work together a lot, like the whole week, and it’s just a better environment overall. I already feel a lot of improvement just being with them,” said Nyaw.
“Not everyone on our team is known, but we’re all capable of doing great things. I’ve seen everyone on our team do great things.”
Nyaw will be one of the most productive pieces of that squad, and says his ability to distribute the ball and get to the rim is what he’ll bring to the table.
“I try to get everyone going and keep the intensity up, and then try and change the game on the defensive end,” said Nyaw. “And if I do score, it’s from getting to the rack as a much as possible, and I’m trying to add a mid-range to my game.”
Last season Nyaw came off the bench and was a spark for the Thunder. This summer he’s going to work on becoming a better leader.
“Coach expected me to come in and change the tempo of the game and to direct things on defense, he said I was the spark for the team,” said Nyaw.
“I want to learn how to become a better leader and add more to my game offensively.”
As his 16U season continues to unfold, Nyaw says he hopes his recruitment can materialize. Right now he’s heard just a little from two Midwest programs.
“I spoke with Loras a little while back, and Augustana invited me to one of their team camps,” said Nyaw, who mentioned one D2 school he’s like to see come after him.
“As the season goes by, hopefully I can get more in the loop with Upper Iowa, I’ve always known them as a kid, and a guy from Storm Lake who I grew up watching, Luke Lenhart, goes there, and I always just wanted to go where he went.”
