Prospect Profile: Mark Wise (2020)
This is the message that I woke up to Saturday morning in my Twitter inbox, “I seen you all (y’all) top 10 point guards, what is that based on in the 2020 (class)?” It was at this moment that I knew Deer Park High School and All-Ohio Elite player Mark Wise felt slighted by not being included on the list. And after the year he produced in his first varsity season with the Wildcats, he has every reason to feel that way. “I feel that I am better than everyone on the list and that I work harder than them as well,” Wise stated when asked how he felt when he first saw the list. Not only does Wise talk the talk, but based on the numbers he put up walks the walk as well. Mark was named 1st team All-CHL as freshman while averaging 14.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and tied for the league lead in assist at 6 per game.
Standing 6’3, Wise is a big-guard that can play both backcourt positions. “I watch a lot of CJ McCollum and Bradley Beal and how they play with and without the ball,” Mark stated. “McCollum can play both guard spots so I watch him a lot He can also shoot off the dribble and works well without the ball. And Beal was just a shooter when he got to the league, now he can drive and do other things as well.” As for his game, Wise has a lot in his bag that he can use as well. With his size Mark does an outstanding job of getting too and finishing at the rim. His size also allows him to see over the defense which makes him a dangerous passer and rebounder as well. Mr. Wise also plays with a good pace and never seems to play to fast or slow, which is one of his areas of improvement for the summer. “I think that I play with good pace but I would like to play a little faster, so that is something I have been working on,” he stated. “I would like my speed to catch up with my strength.”
Mark Wise is definitely a name that coaches at the next level will want to take note of over the next few years. And if you were to overlook him, he will make sure that you know who he is. Respectfully, of course.
