Prep Hoops’ Midwest Cup: Top 2019 Guards
Jake Ketner, 6’3 G (Minnesota Rise 17U)
Even while playing up a grade level, Ketner was the best prospect we saw from the Minnesota Rise 17U team. He was excellent on both sides of the ball while guiding his team to a hard-fought 17U title. The Minnesota Valley Lutheran wing is a lethal combo of length, skill and smarts.
Sam Glenn, 6’2 G (Beyond Ball 16U)
His wiry and lengthy frame allows him to get through spaces and make deflections that other guys simply cannot do. He uses his length well to finish at the rim and can also drop a 3-ball with regularity. This Glenn brother could become one of 2020’s best two-way players.
Jace Peterson, 5’11 G (AFES 16U)
He was magnificent in AFES’ semifinal win over Beyond Ball, helping secure a come-from-behind triumph with 13 second half points, including seven very clutch free-throws.
Calvin Carlson, 5’10 SG (AFES 16U)
The Fort Dodge-based squad was on fire during the second half of its comeback win over Beyond Ball in the semifinals, and Carlson was the catalyst. The Humboldt product canned three second half triples, two of them early on, helping to get things going in the come-from-behind win.
Jackson Kochendorfer, 6’1 SG (AFES 16U)
The Fort Dodge junior-to-be was instrumental in AFES’ unlikely second half comeback over Beyond Ball. In all, he canned four 3s in the second half, and never cooled, keeping the relentless and athletic Beyond Ball squad at length at the end of the semifinal win.
Keontae Luckett, 5’10 PG (Pump N Run Black 16U)
This New London floor general is as quick as any guard in the state, and his blow-by ability is certainly his best strength. His jumper leaves a lot to be desired, but when that begins to materialize, he’ll be a lethal threat.
Jackson Molstead, 5’10 PG (Martin Bros 16U)
For the second straight weekend this Charles City sophomore was dazzling. He’s been an elite player throughout his first two high school seasons, and uses great quickness, high-level vision, and a beautiful jumper to accomplish that.
Dillon Carlson, 6’1 SG (Martin Bros 16U)
A stock-riser out of Ankeny, Carlson continues to impress this spring thanks in large part to his high basketball IQ and precision shooting. An off-guard but with some slick handles, this coach’s son should step into a very major role with the Hawks next season as a junior.
