All Ohio Super 16: Northwest Ohio Performers
It’s only right that Ohio programs were in control all weekend in Reynoldsburg at the All Ohio Super 16. Not only did a program from the Buckeye State win all of the high school age levels, we were also often represented on both benches during the Gold Championship matchups.
On a player-by-player basis, some guys really stepped up to the competition and turned some heads with their play. From Monday-Wednesday, we’ll be recapping those individual performances, segmented by region. To start, let’s check out six underclassmen from Northwest Ohio.
Ryan Fries (2019), 6’2” G, All Ohio Gold / Sylvania Southview
Currently, Fries appears to be a shooting specialist. The Sylvania prospects tends to lurk behind the three-point line and has sound catch-and-shoot mechanics from out there. He is most aggressive with the jumper when his feet are set.
Regardless, Fries has hardly missed any open ones when we’ve watched this spring — on Sunday against the Mid Ohio Pumas, he was 3/3 from deep in a close game.
Zeb Jackson (2020), 6’1” G, C2K Elite 16u / Maumee Valley
The freshman continues to hang with older competition this season, as we saw him playing 17U last year on a couple occasions.
Jackson is always hard to defend one-on-one, because of his elusive right-to-left crossover move that draws tons of separation. This weekend, he took a step forward by shooting immediately after that move, instead of allowing the defense to catch back up. As he continues gaining consistency on that action, he’ll become a mid-range nightmare.
Sunday was a peek into the potential future: on possessions where he puts real pressure on his defender by attacking downhill, Jackson gets a wide open look every time.
Dominique Cole (2020), 6’5” F/C, C2K Elite / Toledo Central Catholic
This weekend, Cole played more within himself than what we witnessed in Fort Wayne. All that means is that he wasn’t forcing plays off the bounce. Instead, Cole was making plays more as a passer when he wasn’t within his shooting range — often finding an active VonCameron Davis around the rim. Cole also showed a willingness to rebound, which is complimented by his strength/frame.
Jonzell Norrils (2020), 5’10” PG, All Ohio Gold / Toledo Central Catholic
Initially, Norrils will impress you with his speed from baseline-to-baseline, as he routinely beats the other team up the court. Then, once you start paying attention closely, you realize how intelligent he is from the point guard spot.
Norrils is a true floor general. While he pushes the tempo at times, he can also play a deliberate style when the game is close. Norrils set up his teammates the entire game, and seemed to have an understanding of when (and more importantly, when not) to pass the ball to guys, depending on when they were positioned on the floor.
With it being one of our first times studying Norrils, it’s safe to say he was a major stock riser from the Super 16.
Jackson Sizemore (2020), 6’5” W/F, All Ohio Gold / Perrysburg
Sizemore has major upside, even though he is already producing at a high rate. Against the zone on Saturday, Sizemore did an excellent job of cutting straight to the basket from the corners at opportune times. Also, he spaces the floor with a confident three-point stroke. Appears to have the tools of becoming an interest stretch-4 prospect. However, Sizemore could become a true wing, given his ability to run the floor and finish smoothly in transition.
Mason Loeffler (2020), 6’2” G, All Ohio Gold / Evergreen
Loeffler’s engagement level was superb on the wing. While others on the Gold team were doing more creating, Loeffler displayed a high-IQ by spacing the floor appropriately. Once Loeffler saw the basketball, he was always ready to shoot, and converted at a rather high rate. The incoming sophomore is also pretty athletic around the rim, even flushing it home once in the fastbreak.
