NY2LA: 2020 Scouting
PrepHoopsIllinois attended the NY2LA Sports Invitational over the weekend in Milwaukee. It featured an array of teams throughout the state of Illinois. Here is our scouting report on the class of 2020 prospects at the event.
SG Josh Holmes (ET21 Buckeyes 15U)
Holmes is an impressive scoring guard. The 6’0” Jones 2020 prospect just has a knack for getting buckets. He is a sound perimeter shooter with a clean looking stroke from three. Drilled a trio off the catch in the game we saw. Also had a nice shot fake where he let his man fly by and then drilled a pull up jumper. Holmes will either need to grow or develop point guard skills to become a D1 player, but early in the process he is worth monitoring.
C Chris Conway (ET21 Buckeyes)
Conway is an impressive young prospect! The Naperville Central 6’7” center has a long and lanky build with a projectable frame. Looks like he could grow a couple more inches. Excellent rebounder that high points the ball at its highest point and outlets it to his guards. Consistently gets on the glass. Little weak finishing around the hoop at this early stage. Has a chance to be an excellent shot blocking and post defender down the road. This is going to be a name we are going to be hearing more about down the line!
PG Alec Millender (ET21 Buckeyes)
Millender saw key minutes as a freshman for St. Rita and is now running the show for ET21 Buckeyes at the 15U level. Long and rangy point guard with a tremendous feel for the game. Slick passer that has an advanced feel for the game and getting others involved. Smooth in the pick and roll making quality decisions with the ball. Handles it well and has a lot of potential.
G Dan Florey (Chicago Lockdown 15U)
Florey has tremendous size at 6’3” for a young combo guard. He plays with a great feel for the game. Not an overly explosive athlete, but he has a feel for getting where he needs to on the floor to get what he wants accomplished. Florey makes sound decisions with the ball in the half court and is becoming more assertive on the glass. Nice looking perimeter stroke. Skilled guard one to track from St. Ignatius in 2020.
PG Grant Niego (Chicago Lockdown)
Grant is the next in a long line of Niego point guards for Lyons. Just like his two older brothers that play the lead guard spot he is tough as nails, competitive, and a great leader. He can also really shoot the basketball! Niego is a plus shooter off the catch from three. Good passer especially in transition.
PG Connor Glennon (Chicago Lockdown)
Glennon is a small point guard that is super fiery and competitive. He is tough getting in the lane and likes to use a floater. Also a capable three point shooter off the catch. Very active defender that is pesky at the point of attack.
SG Christian Shumate (Chicago Lockdown)
Shumate is a prospect we saw play well a few weeks back in Ft. Wayne. He is a bouncy two guard that isn’t very skilled, but rather relies on his athleticism. Plus rebounder for a guard and really gets after it on the defensive end.
SG DeAndre Hagan (Chicago Lockdown)
Hagan jumped on our radar at this event. The 6’3” Brother Rice wing is a lefty two guard that loves to attack on the baseline. Gets out in transition and finishes well in the open floor. Athletic and quick wing with some upside.
SG Isaiah Rivera (Quad City Elite 15U)
Rivera has the looks of a young D1 prospect. He is a versatile prospect with size at 6’4”. Can play the one through three positions on the offensive end of the floor. Very strong when attacking downhill putting the defense on their heels. He attacks his man and can either go around them or through them with his strength. Gets to the rim with relative ease against 15U competition. So smooth with the ball in his hands. Not a knock down shooter at this stage, but is capable of hitting a pull up jumper from both mid-range and three on occasion. What makes him such a tough cover is his passing ability. Great passer in half court and transition. Feel for getting others involved at a young age. Rivera also competes on the defensive end moving well laterally.
C Devon House (Quad City Elite 15U)
House is a 6’6” center that has a wide body. He is effective using it to create space on the interior. Carves out room to work in the paint. Soft touch around the hoop and uses the glass well. Although an under the rim athlete at this stage he has nimble footwork and some agility around the hoop including a nice up and under. Dominates rebounding in his area. The part that was most impressive was the passing he displayed going post to post, high/low, and finding cutters through the lane. House should be monitored by low-major D1 programs early in the process.
PF Solomon Gustafson (Quad City Elite)
This 6’6” Rock Island four man has good length and uses that to his advantage on the glass. Rebounds well in his area snatching them with his length. Contests shots on the defensive end. Flashes offensive potential, but isn’t consistent with it at this stage. Intriguing prospect to track in 2020 especially if he grows.
C Nate Seputis (Team RWA)
Lincoln Way East 2020 6’9” center Nate Seputis is the top prospect on a solid Team RWA 16U group and he is playing up a year with this squad! The long and wiry big is an excellent defensive rebounder that once he adds on strength will be even better! Rim protector as he is a shot blocking presence at a young age. Flashes skill being able to hit a mid-range jumper. Tons of upside with this post!
SG Josh Preston (Fundamental U)
Preston impressed us at the NY2LA Sports Invitational. The 6’3” shooting guard has size on the wing and a crafty scoring game. Creative finisher around the hoop and gets in the paint for a lot of his scores. Also showed some ability and potential as a passer.
PG Luke Scheffers (Fundamenal U)
Scheffers stands at 6’0” out of St. Charles North High School. This point guard works well around screens. Slippery with the ball in his hands through traffic and can hit a mid-range jumper. One to track over the next couple years as St. Charles North is known for producing quality point guards.
