Kansas City Classic Recap (Class of 2019 Point Guard/Combo Guards)
Here is a look at some of the Class of 2019 point guards and combo guards from last weekend’s Kansas City Classic in Lawrence, KS
DaJuan Harris 6’1″ MoKan Elite: A smooth, yet explosive combo guard who excels on both ends of the court. I liked watching him work on the defensive end where he used his footwork and length to pick the pockets of opposing ball handlers without making any contact. It usually ended up in a nice dunk on the other end. On offense, he is an unselfish player who can handle the ball and but buckets with his smooth jumper off the dribble. He has already received his first Division I offer from Tulsa.
Tyreke Locure 5’10” MoKan Elite: A talented young point guard from Des Moines, IA who can basically do it all. He is an excellent facilitator who can make his teammates better with his passing and court vision. He is a very creative offensive player who can get it down at all three levels. He knocks down his open 3-pointers off the catch or he can get his shot off the dribble. His handles are smooth and tight and he can get to the basket at any time and finish at the rim in a variety of ways. A true point guard who can also get buckets.
Keyon Thomas KC Spurs Black: A nifty southpaw point guard who directed the Spurs to the 16U championship over the weekend. He has the ability to play at different speeds and change the tempo of a game to his liking. He is good in the open court and can get to the basket and finish with a left handed finger roll or drop the ball off to an open teammate. He is also a good rebounder from the guard position.
Jayvaunte Hawkins 5’10” Team Rush: A small, quick guard who can run the point or play off the ball with equal effectiveness. He has a nice stroke from 3-point range off the catch, which he displayed throughout the weekend. When defenders closed out, he also displayed a quick first step to the basket and a stop and pop jumper from 10 feet.
Dre Sorrells 5’10” MoKan Elite: A small, quick guard who was also one of the best perimeter shooters in the tournament over the weekend. He had one game in which he made seven of eight from beyond the 3-point line. He is a very dangerous shooter off the catch. He can also get to the basket and score with dribble penetration with either hand and drop dimes to open teammates.
Glen McClintock 6’0″ Team Rush: A solid point guard who handles the ball well and can distribute the basketball in an efficient manner. He has a nice stroke from 3-point range and can get to the basket and create contact. On defense, he did a nice job of playing the passing lanes and had his share of steals during the weekend.
Evan Asleson 6’0″ Arsenal Hoops: Enjoyed an productive weekend in leading his team to a 5-1 record and the Silver Division championship. He is an excellent perimeter shooter who can knock down jumpers off the catch or coming off of screens, which he did throughout the weekend. He enjoyed several high scoring games with his stroke. He has nice handles and will give you some dribble drive to the bucket as well.
Courtland Sol 6’0″ MoKan Select: A smooth point guard with a nice body who plays at his own pace. He has slick handles and excellent court vision. He knows where all of his teammates are at all times and hit them with pinpoint passes throughout the weekend. His best offensive weapon is a stop and go move that leaves defenders frozen in their tracks. He can do it going left or right and can also finish with either hand. Courtland also displayed a nice float game in the lane.
Tayari Goodwin 5’8″ Arsenal Hoops: He displayed all the elements of a consummate point guard throughout the weekend. Tayari did a nice job of distributing the ball and getting it into the hands of the scoring threats while playing at any tempo. He made his share of open 3-pointers to keep the court spread. He was also a pest of the defensive end with his speed and quickness. A good floor general throughout the tournament.
