Jayhawk Invitational Recap (Class of 2018 Wings)
Here is a look at some of the top Missouri Class of 2018 wing players from last weekend’s Jayhawk Invitational in Overland Park, KS.
Mason Taylor 6’3″ KC Pacers Blue: Excellent wing player who could handle the ball, score at a high rate and play solid defense. He displayed three-level scoring ability as he used his size and athleticism to get to the rim and as well as a nice mid-range jumper off the bounce. Taylor also showed 3-point range as he knocked down five from long distance in one game. He also operated well in the low post against smaller guards.
Saadique Perkins 6’3″ KC Run GMC: A nice player with good size and athleticism on the wing. Perkins is a fine two-way player who was productive when slashing to the basket and getting out in the transition game. He was a very good finisher at the rim with a nice perimeter shooting touch to boot.
Logan Jenkins 6’4″ Team Rush: One of the better perimeter shooters in the tournament, Jenkins was good for a lot of instant offense whenever he entered the game. He was also good at knocking down timely 3-pointers at key points of the game when his team needed it. He was good off the catch and moved well without the basketball to the open spots to create his opportunities.
Davis Aufdembrink 6’2″ Missouri Combat: Another excellent 3-point marksmen who averaged 22 points in his team’s three pool play games. He was one of the best in the tournament from long distance. Davis has the ability to stretch the defense to his limits with his shooting range, plus he has a quick release to go along with it. You have to guard him out to 25 feet to make sure he doesn’t get an uncontested look.
Drew Canady 6’4″ Queen City Cavs: A long and lanky wing player with a smooth perimeter skill set. In his first game, he scored 22 points and knocked down five 3-pointers in a pool play victory over KC Elite. He was very comfortable as a ball handler and did a nice job passing the ball and moving without the ball.
Outside of Missouri
Gabe Kalscheur 6’4″ Howard Pulley (MN): A strong, physical wing player who has been one of the top 3-point shooters in the Nike EYBL. He was more of a scorer than a shooter last weekend as he got to the basket and scored a lot of buckets in transition. Gabe displayed a nice one-dribble 17 footer that was money.
Jordan Phillips 6’6″ Dallas Showtyme Elite (TX): A big, strong wing player who was one of the biggest perimeter players in the tournament. His size and strength pretty much enabled him to get wherever he wanted to go on the court as he had the ball in his hands for much of the weekend. His best scoring came from getting to the basket or knocking down mid-range jumpers.
Le’Tre “Ice” Darthard 6’3″ Dallas Showtyme Elite (TX): The kid has a game that is befitting of his nickname. He is a long, athletic wing player with smooth moves to the basket. He gets into the lane to score on nice twisting drives plus he can elevate to knock down 15 footers off the bounce. He is also good at shooting into the passing lanes of defense.
