Big Shots-Charlotte: Underclassmen Standouts
The future is very bright in the Palmetto State for years to come with basketball talent. Prep Hoops takes a look at some players we saw this weekend that will be wearing the gaps and gowns in 2020-2021.
Chase Cannon (2020) Wando HS (Mount Pleasant) – TMP 15U
Cannon saw limited minutes this season on the Wando varsity basketball team. Cannon a left-handed post player has the ability to hit 10-12 footer from the elbow or posting you up in the paint. Cannon seems to like to play with contact. Cannon sets screens and seals very well.
Jamel McGowan (2020) Goose Creek HS – TMP 15U
McGowan 6’1 shifty guard with the ball. McGowan several times today used the crossover dribble to get by defenders. McGowan has a nice mid-range game and the ability to create his own shot when needed. McGowan should see good minutes on the varsity level for the Gators next season.
Denham Wojcik (2021) Porter Gaud (Charleston) – TMP 16U (pictured on front)
Wojcik seems to impress more and more I watch him play. Wojcik just 5’8 is a fearless guard on the floor. Wojcik the son of former College of Charleston Head Coach Doug Wojcik has a great basketball mind for the game. Wojcik plays up on the TMP 16U instead of the 15U. Wojcik will be entering the 9th grade next fall.
Josh Hall (2021) Dent M.S. (Columbia) – Central Carolina Force 14U
Hall 6’2 has his motor running at all times on the floor. Hall is in the middle of every play on the glass or running down a loose ball in the corner. Hall works from block to block in the paint. Hall a vocal leader on the floor will attend Richland Northeast HS in the fall next season.
DaVeon Thomas (2021) Lee Central M.S. (Bishopville) – Central Carolina Force 14U
Thomas got to the basket quite easily when he wanted to today. Thomas has the ability to slash to the rack and pull-up with a mid-range jumper. Thomas scored 22 points in the game today.
Lawton Fulford (2021) North Myrtle Beach Christian – Manzer Basketball Club 15U
Fulford has been a mainstay for the Stallions for yes already 4 years on the varsity squad. Fulford averaged 17.1 ppg and grabbed 3.6 rebounds while connecting on 39% (81-210) this past season. Fulford a shooting guard can pop off screens but needs space for his shot. Fulford repeated the 8th grade this past season and has now scored 770 career points entering his freshman season this coming fall.
John Butler (2021) Hillcrest M.S. (Simpsonville) – Team United NC 15
Butler 6’10 already is a very long and agile young man. Butler who has over a 7’2 wingspan will attend J.L. Mann HS next season from what he told Prep Hoops. Butler must get stronger but that will come in time has the tools to be a very good player down the road. Butler will be a name you will see on top of the 2021 class in the Palmetto State in years to come.
