Cincy Shooting/Combo Guards: Class of 2018
In part two of our series on class of 2018 Southwest Ohio/Cincinnati area talent, we take a look at some of the shooting/combo guards in the Cincinnati area. This is the position that maybe the deepest in Cincy, players who have a wide array of skill sets that can play multiple positions. So let us look at some the better combo/shooting guards in the Cincinnati area.
Dominic “DJ” Brewton, 6’3, Mt. Healthy- If you have been following Prep Hoops over the past few months this is a name that you should certainly know. If you have not been following get to this this talented guards name. Brewton has the handle to play the point guard along with the shooting and scoring ability to off the ball. DJ has been tearing it up this AAU season including scoring 16 points in 2 minutes and 30 seconds to lead Team One Phenom to a come from behind victory at the Circle City Shootout in April. Averaged 15.5 points per game during the prep season on 47% shooting.
Jarett Cox, 6’2, Lakota East- One of the better scorers in the Cincy area, Cox led the ultra-talented Greater Miami Conference in scoring at 18.4 points per game. Jarett is an effective scorer from all three levels on the court while also having the ability to get to the free throw line as well. Failed to score in double digits in only two games last season for the Thunderhawks while shooting almost 49% from the floor and 41% from the three.
Kameron Gibson, 6’2, Walnut Hills- One of the more underrated players, but this is definitely not due to lack of talent. Gibson was one of the main cogs for a very talented Eagles team that won the Eastern Cincinnati Conference. Kameron is very good with the ball and his hands as he has good handle along with being a solid decision maker. Has a very, very good mid-range in which he uses a variety of floaters and lay-ups to finish at the rim. Gibson gave a glimpse of possible things to come when he exploded for a career high 35 points in a win over Milford back in February.
Darweshi Hunter, 6’3, Princeton- As stated on Twitter and in his Super 16 recap over the weekend by PHO reporter Anthony Garcia, Hunter is a kid that can really score the ball. Finished second to the aforementioned Jarett Cox in the GMC in scoring at 17.5 points per game. Darweshi does not have a lot wasted movement in his game, plays north and south and can really attack the rim. He also does an outstanding job of using angles to attack the rim from the wings as well. Shot 38% from the three and 82% from the free throw line last prep season.
Colin Shaw, 6’2, Indian Hills- Colin is a tough, aggressive kid that can score the basketball from all three levels. Even though he can shot the ball from three with range, Shaw is at his best when he is attacking the rim and going downhill. Finished in the top 5 in the Cincinnati Hills League in points per game (2nd at 18.2) and rebounds (5th at 7.6). Also for the season Colin averaged over 6 free throws attempted per game.
