Battle at the Lakes: Underrated Prospects
The PrepHoops Battle at the Lakes took place over the weekend in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There were plenty of Under the Radar Prospects that played well. We look at those guys here in our Underrated Prospects from the 2017 Battle at the Lakes. Here are 30 prospects that are sleepers!
PG Zach Robinson (Tri City Thunder 17U)
Robinson is a tough and strongly built combo guard. Scrappy player that contributes on the boards and is a solid passer. Plus shooter off the catch from three. St. Charles East guard will be a good small college player.
PG Zach Ludwig (Tri City Thunder 17U)
Ludwig runs the show for Tri City Thunder. The St. Charles North point guard is a capable perimeter shooter. Best as a setup man finding shooters and his bigs on dump off passes.
SG Adreone Sprinkles (Minnesota Fab 17U)
Sprinkles displayed athletic scoring potential getting in the lane. Converted runners consistently and finished with straight line drives to the hoop. Made a pair of threes as well. Sleeper scorer out of Minnesota.
SG Tristan Jass (Team RWA 17U)
Jass is a playmaking combo guard from Wisconsin. Thick bodied guard that plays with reckless abandon. Likes to attack and throw up tough shots. Strength to finish around the hoop.
C Grant Basile (Wisconsin Shooters 17U)
Basile is a Wisconsin post prospect that has broad shoulders and plays extremely physical. Rebounds well in area. Can score with back to basket and hit occasional three. Worth a look at the D2 level.
SG Brian Hernandez (Team Rose 17U)
This Orr 2018 shooting guard is a thick bodied wing that is tough as nails. He is best spotting up from three and letting it fly. Can be streaky at times, but can get really hot from deep. Gritty defender that also competes on the glass.
PG Isaiah Fuller (Team Rose 17U)
This OPRF lead guard quietly goes about his business and is moving up the PG board in Illinois. Quick off the bounce and excels in transition getting a lot of layups with his speed. Improved perimeter shot and has a solid feel running a team.
SF Dannie Smith (Team Rose 17U)
Smith is a tough and rugged wing that just produces. The Orr 2018 broke out on the scene as a junior and had a nice weekend with Team Rose. Defends and boards. One of the better two way wings in the class. Like the toughness and aggressiveness he plays with on offense.
G Koreem Ozier (Butler Elite 17U)
Ozier can flat out score it! The Wisconsin combo guard drilled pull up jumpers from all over the floor. Quick and shifty guard that handled it well in space. Rebounds for a wing.
PF Zion Fortune (Chicago Demons 17U)
Fortune is a St. Laurence post that has a strong body. Plus area rebounder. Gets on the offensive glass for second chances. Even flashed a three off the catch.
G Javion May (Chicago Demons 17U)
May is a strong bodied point guard that attacks the rim. He is coming off a strong junior year. Good ball handler that gets out in transition.
PG Sion Lightfoot (All Love 17U)
Lightfoot is a 6’0” point guard from Kankakee High School. The lead guard is best as a spot up shooter where he drilled a trio of threes in the first half of one of the games we saw.
PG Marquis Henry (Full Package 17U)
Henry is an unsigned senior point guard that is a volume scorer. Takes a lot of shots, but makes some tough ones. Quick off the bounce and is a capable three point shooter, but falls in love with it at times. Active hands on the defensive end of the floor.
SF Sam Shafer (Young & Reckless 17U)
Shafer is probably one of the highest regarded prospects on this list, but is worth noting as his recruitment is still under the radar. The Lincoln Way East wing holds one offer from SIU. Plus shooter with size that can stroke it off the catch. Sneaky athlete that is skilled. D1 prospect.
PG Maurice Commander (Young & Reckless 17U)
Commander runs a team to perfection. The crisp lead guard out of Marist is a plus passer in the half court that finds open teammates for assists. Very effective in the drive and kick. Mid-range shot has improved. Active on ball defender that puts pressure on opposing point guards. D1/D2 prospect.
F Jarland Mitchell (Young & Reckless 17U)
Mitchell is a new name to add to the radar from Carl Schurz High School. The 6’4” combo forward is a plus athlete that runs the floor with ease. Flashes ability in the post as a scorer with a right handed hook shot. Quick second jump to the glass.
SF Charles McKinney (Illinois T-Wolves 17U)
McKinney is a tall and angular wing that loves to get out in transition. Slippery through traffic and has long strides getting to the hoop. Struggled a bit finishing at the cup. Explosive second jump off the floor. Streaky shooter. Big time athlete with upside.
SG Kyron Heard (Illinois T-Wolves 17)
Heard is an angular and powerful 6’2” wing that is a big time athlete. Quick on the interior and gets on the glass. Unsigned senior that would be a good small college or JUCO option.
PG Darren Williams (D Up 17U)
Williams is a Joliet West point guard that is slippery through traffic. The thin guard gets out in transition and hit a couple tough mid-range jumpers.
PF Charlie Hoehne (Made Men 16U)
Big fan of this OPRF four man. Skilled post that is a fluid athlete. Runs the floor and scores in the open court as a wing finisher. In the half court he works well out of the high-post. Makes excellent decisions as a passer to cutters and in the high/low. Can put it on the deck a few dribbles.
PF Demetrius Schaffer (Made Men 16U)
Schaffer is a big bodied 6’6” power forward that plays with a lot of strength on the interior. Area rebounder that was outstanding on the glass. Runs floor well for his size and has a soft touch around hoop.
PG Aiqujuan Bates (RAW 16U)
Bates is a thick point guard that is mostly a scorer. Acrobatic finishes at the rim on a consistent basis. Had a couple up and unders and used his strength to finish at the hoop.
PG Trevon Hamilton (Team Rose 16U)
Hamilton is a small and stocky scoring point guard that gets in the lane and to the free throw line at a high rate. The 2019 should see minutes next year for Curie.
SG Dante Maddox (All-In 15U)
Maddox is a confident wing from Bloom at 6’2”. Effective shooter off the catch from three. When he hits a couple can get rolling from deep. Got out in transition for a nice dunk off a steal.
PG Elijah Pickens (All-In 15U)
Pickens is super tiny at only 5’8”, but plays with a lot of heart. He is confident with the ball in his hands pushing the pace and can pass the rock.
SF CJ Bennett (Young & Reckless 16U)
Bennett stands at 6’4” with a projectable body. He is a plus athlete that gets out in the open floor and even showed flashes of a perimeter jumper. All upside here in this De La Salle 2019 forward.
SF Keenan Jones (Young & Reckless16U)
Jones is a new name that emerged from Whitney Young. The 6’4” 2019 prospect is a lefty small forward that is bouncy in transition and loves to slash to the hoop. Competes on the defensive end as well.
PG Isiah Burd (Young & Reckless 16U)
Active defender with super long arms. Offensively he plays with a quiet confidence. The long and rangy lead guard is smooth with the rock in his hands and can shoot it from deep. Quick off the bounce. Once he adds on some strength he will be one of the many Bolingbrook point guards that cause defenses problems.
SF Ysrael Hernandez (Young & Reckless 16U)
Hernandez stands at 6’4” from Latin High School. He played the best we have seen him in Minnesota. Thick bodied wing displayed more athleticism than we thought with a couple nice transition dunks. What he is best at is spotting up from three where he is a sound catch and shoot threat.
C Joacheim Prince (Fundamental U Gray16U)
Prince is a 6’7” big bodied center that looks like an offensive tackle. Solid footwork and seals well on the block. Showed a nice right handed hook shot and got deep post position. Conditioning will need to improve for Jacobs post to max out potential.
