Battle at the Lakes: Tyrell Triple Double, Wishart 33, Powerhouse Power W, etc
Friday night was a small sampling of the talent that Battle at the Lakes will have on the floor this weekend competing across the Twin Cities. Tyrell Terry, Cal Wishart, and the Power Firm of Schaeffer and Davis lead the way.
Tyrell Triple Double
DeLaSalle state champion 2019 point guard Tyrell Terry is the type of point guard that everyone would want to play for. Why? Tyrell gets players easy shots and he is the one that does most of the work with his quick push into wing entry, with his kickouts, his dribble attacks into zip feeds, and the fact that he puts the ball on the hands in the perfect position for a player to catch and complete.
Tyrell seems to have grown to about 6-foot-2 or maybe taller with outstanding length. Few players snap the ball from side to side like Terry making the defense work and even fewer have the feet set clean jumper touch that Tyrell does. Add in his chase down of boards and what do you have? A triple double.
Terry didn’t have his best shooting night making four of eleven attempts but he made some threes for his dozen points plus grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out twelve assists. That is one of the few triple doubles you will see in the often even playing time rotations of spring and summer basketball. And it comes from a player that makes the game look easy in several different ways.
Calvin Stays Hot
The ever growing conversation of “who is the next best point guard in the state after Tre Jones” is a hot debate. Most of the time it’s a “who have you seen lately” or “what’s your preference” type of conversation, and there are many potential answers.
Delano guard Calvin Wishart, coming off a year of 27/8/8 per game averages, has picked up his play and has moved to one of the lead spots or the top spot in that “Next PG” debate. Calvin found his grove two weekends ago in Atlanta putting up big numbers and leading to offers from Towson and Furman.
A Greenwood Elite team missing half of their roster had some athletes but none of them had the defensive footwork to deal with Wishart defensively. He shook defenders with a quick separation move into a stepback or quick pull-up and would release his shot while defenders either tried to recover, or just gave up. Wishart’s touch netted 33 points on 11 of 15 shooting including a healthy five three-pointers (and making all six foul shots) in a running time game where he sat the last six minutes.
Power Firm – Schaeffer & Davis
The biggest win of the night belonged to Powerhouse Minnesota 17s. This is a team that lost to Fury Antl early in the Comets Shootout and I think some people may have wrote them off. The team has bounced back with good showings out west and in the Terrific 24 including a headline win over Belmont Shore. You can now add another headliner as they beat Team Rush 74-66.
Prep Hoops colleague TC Hoops Czar was on hand to keep Minnesota followers informed and the first note from him was that Michael Schaeffer (St. Cloud Cathedral) and Anthony Davis (Hopkins) scored the first 15 points of the game to lead Powerhouse early. Schaeffer then made the game winning foul shots for his team as he and Davis had strong games overall. Big win for Powerhouse Minnesota who moves on to play this afternoon at Wayzata High.
Schaeffer led all scorers with 17 points while Davis had 16. Those two got things started and then Jarius Cook had 16 including a huge three late in the game. Josiah Strong chipped in with 15 points.
Prospect Notes
- Prior Lake 6-foot-9 center Robert Jones of the 2019 class is improving quickly. The size and length is there and now his agility is catching up. His putback dunk was the best example running the floor and one hand completing but the quick off the feet boards and swats were solid too.
- Jack Middleton of Edina and D1 Minnesota scored 18 second half points including four three-pointers put many on notice. He’s a 6-foot-4 wing who started the game slow, but ate his Spinach Wheaties (paging the 80s) at the half and came out to drain. And drain. All his scores looked the same; picture perfect form with a pretty splash.
- Khari Broadway attacked Greenwood Elite early and the Park Center 2019 loved what he saw. Opponents didn’t have the size nor the toughness to keep in front of Broadway. No shots were rushed and all were high percentage in space as Broadway scored 14. Loved his defensive talk and positioning for D1 Minnesota 16U too.
- Team Rush 16s guard Kamto Eze has what you would call, a scoring mentality. This guy is so confident in himself he was willing to go at two or three defenders to try and complete plays. Early in the game it wasn’t pretty but Eze’s physical attack and soft touch on the move led to a 22 point game.
- Looking for a rebounder? I give you 2019 Darrius Hughes from Team Rush 16s. The D1 Minnesota kids simply could not put a body on him. Hughes was too quick to the ball, too strong, too long, and too quick off his feet. The power forward corralled 18 boards Friday night in his Battle at the Lakes opener.
- The D1 Minnesota 17s crushed a Greenwood Elite team missing many of their big guns 82-51. Race Thompson had a fall away out of the post and a couple dunks getting him to a quick 13 points before sitting most of the second half. Cody Landwehr grabbed eight boards and Both Gach scored 13 points led by three treys.
- Carl Bow Jr of Hazel Park High School of Michigan led Greenwood Elite with 20 points against D1 Minnesota utilizing an explosive first step to get to space and use a massive vertical leap to release a high lifting jumper. He also missed a baseline dunk that would of blown the roof off the place.
