2020: Fast Risers (Part 2)
The summer is crucial for all of the talent across the United States. In Florida, there are a ton of players looking to not only improve their overall games but also draw more attention from the top college programs.
Here is a look at the second set of fast risers in the class of 2020.
Scottie Barnes (Cardinal Newman)
At 6’7″, 200 lbs., Barnes is much bigger than most 2020 prospects. He’s already drawn so much attention with the likes of UF, Miami and UCF extending offers. Barnes helped Cardinal Newman reached the Class 5A region semifinals this past season. He’s dripping in athleticism and his post moves are just different. The rising sophomore forward is playing for TS Thunderstruck on the circuit.
Dudley Blackwell (Westminster)
Blackwell is running with Team Knight this summer. That bodes well for his future as he can continue to expand his overall game. The 6’5″, 185-pounder has a lot of bounce and right now is known as a dunker. Playing for Class 4A state champion Westminster this past season certainly gave Blackwell a taste of the best. Look for him to have a nice summer and a breakout sophomore year for the Lions.
Malachi Wideman (Sarasota Riverview)
Perhaps the best overall athlete in the entire 2020 Florida class is Wideman. The 6’4″, 180-pounder doubles as a wide receiver for the Rams football team. He earned offers for his work on the gridiron from UF and FAU this month. Wideman is no slacker on the court either for a Sarasota Riverview program that always contends. He’s taking things in stride this summer with Nike Team Florida. Big things are coming for Wideman this fall.
LJ Thomas (Brooks DeBartolo)
Thomas auditioned for the top AAU programs and he earned his spot with Nike Team Florida. Following a steady freshman campaign, the 6’1″ guard is a player to watch. Thomas is a knockdown shooter and someone who gets everyone involved with his speed and vision. I fully expect him to be on the top of guards in the Tampa Bay area if not the entire state.
Cayden Baker (Southwest Florida Christian)
Last but not least is a steady inside presence in Baker. The 6’6″, 200-pounder is also a defensive lineman on the Kings football team. He fared well for a team that went all the way to the Class 3A state semifinal. Baker averaged 9.9 points and 6.4 rebounds as a freshman. He scored 10 points and added nine rebounds in that state semifinal loss to Orlando Christian Prep. Baker is already expanding his game with E1T1 this summer. He returns as a key piece to a deep SWFL Christian group.
