Team 727 is putting together a nice program in St. Pete
Over at St. Pete Canterbury, head coach Anan Smith and his assistant coaches Ric Lenholt and Jimmy Mcsorley run the show for the Team 727 AAU program.
On Wednesday night, I checked out a practice session and Smith as his staff put his group through various drills and a back and forth scrimmage.
Here is a look at the 727 roster.
Jerrick Granville (Lakewood), Dollar Davis (Boca Ciega), Nathan Levi (Canterbury), Jahlon Holland (St. Pete), Steve Roberts (St. Pete), Joey Meyer (Seminole), Rivers Lenholt (Canterbury), A.J. Boyd (Pinellas Park), Will Bond (Canterbury), Jerroda Briscoe (Boca Ciega), Zion Channer (Canterbury), Arik Marvin (Seminole), Deon Harper (Gibbs), Brendan Riggs (Canterbury), Zo Carter (Boca Ciega) and Duke Sherrod (Northeast).
—Davis, Briscoe and Carter are the three players from Boca Ciega. Davis is a crafty point guard with range while Briscoe is a raw wing who has upside. Carter is a smart player who is building confidence as an attacker.
—Canterbury dominates this roster with five players including Levi, Lenholt, Bond, Channer and Riggs. Lenholt is a 2020 guard who is wise beyond his years. Channer is the cousin of 2019 Montverde star R.J. Barrett and you can see that with his pure athleticism. Levi, Bond and Riggs were all out there competing.
—Holland and Roberts are your two representatives from St. Pete. The rising seniors are very solid role players who will get a bump in playing time next season with Darius Banks heading off to college at James Madison.
—Boyd (Pinellas Park), Granville (Lakewood), Meyer (Seminole), Sherrod (Northeast) and Harper (Gibbs) all earned plenty of run during the scrimmage. Boyd is a good outside shooter while Sherrod plays an aggressive style of ball and puts fear into his defenders. Granville and Meyer are two steady ballhandlers. Harper is the biggest post player at 6’5″ and he gets in there a lot.
The summer ahead
Team 727 will play in the Source Hoops Tallahassee Tournament this weekend. They have plenty of other tournaments planned for the rest of the summer.
Smith and his staff keep their players disciplined and do a good job at striving to get better.
The group played well at times, but it is still early in the AAU season. As long as they can come together and play as a unit they’ll be able to compete in most games throughout the summer season.
