Scouting and Highlights: Gary Solomon (2018)

The 6’5″ guard/forward is currently running with The Elite 17u. In combination with his good height, he possesses above average athleticism. These abilities, combined with a solid 3 point shot and good defense, set his ceiling at the very least low-major to mid-major D1.
Here’s my take on Solomon’s game:
Strengths:
Finishing – His length and athleticism allow him to finish over/through bigger defenders. In addition to being able to elevate, he has a soft touch around the rim. He gets a majority of his points around the rim, which is an efficient and consistent way to score.
Defense – Solomon is a solid perimeter defender, as he has the length to contest shooters and the foot speed to keep guards in front of him. He does a good job generating easy fastbreak points off steals. He’s also capable of rotating on helpside and being a shot blocker on smaller guards.
Shooting – While he may not be a pure shooter, he’s capable of hitting shots from a variety of positions. He can hit threes as well as mid-range jumpers off the catch or off the dribble. Also, when he’s hot, he can hit shots at a high rate and put up points fast.
Versatility – His length and athleticism allow him to play bigger than he is, while his quickness and skills allow him to play the 2-guard position. He’s capable of defending both bigger and smaller opponents. He’s also capable of scoring on bigger or smaller opponents. His ability to play the 2, 3 or even 4 can create matchup advantages for his team.
Areas For Development:
Handles/playmaking – If there’s one part of Solomon’s game that needs development, it’s definitely his handles and/or his ability to create off the dribble. If he could develop an ability to create offense off the dribble he would be one of the best players on the floor at all times.
Consistency – This is mostly in regards to his shooting. While this is a problem many high schoolers struggle with, there isn’t much room for inconsistency at the next level, especially D1.
