Recruiting Report: Spencer Hoffman(2018)
Standing at 6’11 and weighing 245 pounds, Spencer Hoffman is one of the few true back-to-the-basket post players in the state of Oregon. After filling the stat sheets in his first three years of high school at Marist Catholic, Hoffman transferred to Churchill, a perennial 5A powerhouse. There he fit in perfectly under a new system where he shared the primary scoring duties with phenom athlete Lucas Wilson.
“I knew playing with Lucas again and reconnecting with my friends at Churchill was gonna be fun, but I had my concerns about how I was going to fit into their system, as Churchill hadn’t utilized a low post scoring threat in quite some time”, Hoffman said. “But I found out immediately that I had made the right choice, as the guys accepted me and responded well to the new offensive system Coach Bokn implemented.”
This team chemistry and Hoffman’s willingness to accept a reduced scoring role from what he had experienced as the primary scorer at Marist translated to team success, as Churchill finished second in 5A behind the leadership of Hoffman and Wilson. Hoffman finished the season averaging 17.5 points and 7 rebounds per game, while shooting a school record 70% from the field and 81% from the line. His decorated high school career included three straight First Team All League Midwestern League selections, two Second Team All State selections, a First Team All State Tournament selection, over 1,300 career points, and the honor of being named League Co-MVP his junior year. He also led the prestigious Les Schwab Invitational in field goal percentage his senior year.
Hoffman has chosen to reclassify to 2018 and sign with Link Year Prep in Branson, Missouri. His teammate and longtime friend Lucas Wilson will be attending Link Year as well next year with him. “I’m really excited about Link Year,” Hoffman said. “Their coaches are first class and genuinely care about getting guys to the next level. I really believe that if I continue to put work in to improve my quickness and vertical, then I will have opportunities to play college basketball at the Division 1 level.”
Currently, Hoffman spends the majority of his free time working out with a local Eugene area strength and conditioning trainer, and lifting with some of his teammates at Churchill. If Hoffman continues to develop as an athlete, his size, touch around the rim, and work ethic should lead to countless collegiate opportunities for him in the now 2018 class.
