Recruiting Report: Montrell Horsey (2018)
The Joppatowne Mariners had a solid 2016-17 season finishing with a 19-5 overall record. Although some key pieces are leaving because of graduation, they’ll still have arguably the top player in the UCBAC in Montrell Horsey.
Horsey averaged 20 points, four assists, three steals, and two blocks per game in his junior campaign. The 6’2 combo guard can play with or without the ball, but he shines in transition with his ability to attack the defender and finish through contact.
As proven by his averages, Horsey is also a pest defensively. His anticipation and quickness allows him to tally plenty of steals while his athleticism often time presents opportunities for block attempts. Horsey told PrepHoops this past week that he currently holds offers from James Madison, UT-Martin, and Cal-State Northridge. He has heard from Delaware and Drexel in regards to being interested in getting involved in his recruitment.
Next season for Joppatowne, Horsey wants to lead the Mariners to the Xfinity Center to compete for the 1A State Championship, a goal he fell short of this past season. “I just want to adopt the mentality to win everything,” Horsey said. “Whether it’s high school or AAU, if I continue to win the offers will come. Skill wise, I wanto to work on my overall playmaking ability and my three-point shot.”
Horsey has a quick release in terms of his jumper. Getting more consistent will open up opportunities to attack close-out defenders and utilize his real strength of finishing around the rim.
It doesn’t take long when you’re watching Horsey to see he is natural born leader. More often than not he is the guy ensuring everyone is on the same page in offensive and defensive sets. College coaches have taken immediate notice to that and Horsey credits that characteristic being a huge factor in his three offers thus far.
Connection with coaches will be huge in Horsey’s recruitment along with the overall feel for the school. “Having a home away from home is most important for me,” Horsey said. “I want to have a comfortable feel when I step on campus and hopefully the coaching staff and team will accept me like I’m family.”
Horsey spends a lot of time studying Damian Lillard’s game. Horsey wants to adopt the mentality of taking over games any time his team needs it. He also relates to Lillard in the sense that Joppatowne is a smaller school, but Horsey won’t allow that to keep him from reaching his ultimate goal.
You can catch Horsey playing for Team Melo 17U on the EYBL circuit this spring/summer.
