Recruiting Report: John Hugley (2020)
One of the most sought after Ohio prospects scouts will have the opportunity to evaluate at this weekend’s EYBL session in Hampton, Virginia, is a 6’9” center from Cleveland Brush, John Hugley (2020).
The young man is already being recruited by some of the most prestigious programs in the Midwest. Just this past weekend, Hugley took a road trip to Kansas for a visit with the Jayhawks.
“It was a nice experience. Just seeing the whole court, seeing the people that went there,” Hugley said.
Hugley said he didn’t have the chance to meet Coach Bill Self, as he was away from campus. Instead, Hugley spent time with the Kansas players primarily.
He described Kansas as a “new interest.” They join Ohio State, Iowa, and Northwestern, as schools who have reached out to Hugley.
“I went to the Ohio State one. But Iowa and Northwestern want me to come down,” Hugley said, when asked about other campus visits.
When Hugley is on campus, he’s mostly gauging the chemistry of the program.

Since we last spoke to Hugley on the record, his game has matured. Being such a young prospect, there’s still room to grow, but he’s showing signs of being a high major player right now.
The growth is a testament to hard work and putting himself in ideal situations for development.
“I work out every day with Curtis Oakley. We work on our skill, do mid-range, do dribble drills, then post ups. Then I’ll run up the court a couple times.”
“[Oakley] is actually a Briggs alumni … He came back when he graduated from college to come and coach us,” Hugley said.
Hugley also has a new AAU team, as he’s running with All Ohio Red this summer.
“I’m happy with my decision. I think playing in the EYBL circuit will get me better for high school basketball, and get my game better all around,” Hugley said.
While he’s improved on most everything to varying degrees over the past season, on-court communication, positioning, and mid-range shooting really jump off the page when you watch him.
At the moment, Hugley is hoping to become stronger with the left and develop his footwork.
The sophomore-to-be carries a 3.2 GPA.
