Recruiting Report: Devion Dunbar (2017)
Siciliy Island’s 6’2 Point Guard Devion Dunbar’s tumultuous high school career has recently come to a close a game ahead of when he would have liked. He was able to lead a very young team to a top seed in 1A, as well as the most wins in school history.
Dunbar was originally ranked as a top 10 prospect in Louisiana in 2018, but he tells us that he has reclassified to the class of 2017, where in our updated rankings he is going to be ranked number 17. When asked about why he chose to reclassify to 2017, he said “I feel like I’m ready for the next level. I’m trying to take care of my family.”
Dunbar has excellent size for his position, and he is a textbook slasher. His inclination is to score first, but he is a willing passer. With his size and strength, he is able to get to the rim with relative easy, and when he gets to the bucket his is able to use his explosion and length to score around size. Those same physical skills are what allows him to be such a good defender at the high school level, and I see those skills on defense to translate to the next level. He says that this offseason he is working on his physical skill set, “I want to continue to get more explosive and continue to get my strength up.”
Dunbar spent the first couple of years of high school at the now-infamous Prime Prep, a charter school in Dallas started Deion Sanders. He says that his recruiting has cooled since coming back to Louisiana. “In Louisiana you barely get people out here. When I was at Prime Prep, I had some really big schools sending me letters and stuff.”
According to Dunbar, he has been talking the most to Baton Rouge Community College lately, with the hope that he will be able to transition to a high major after that, hopefully LSU Dunbar said. He says he has a visit to BRCC in the works, coming this week, where he is hoping to receive his first offer.
Dunbar says he has a 3.0 GPA and made a 19 on his ACT.
