Five Points
- Of course the first note is that this team beat D1 Minnesota last weekend in the D1 Minnesota Spring event. It was the first game played this year by 43 Hoops and the first of three that they won at Chanhassen High School. The game was won in overtime by a basket and it was a big moment for these kids, but it has also raised expectations.
- The biggest problem D1 Minnesota was said to have had with 43 Hoops was the quick guards. The Columbia Heights pair of Deunda Robinson and Quentin Hardict had a fantastic winter and them, along with Deland Phillips (who has played with Robinson on past Howard Pulley teams) really pushed the ball to the next level against D1 Minnesota. Drew Adams is another guard on the team as is Caleb Davis who played a role for state bound CDH this year. It’s a pace pushing, ball pressuring strong group.
- The first thing this team is known for is the Columbia Heights kids. Hardict and Roberson are the backcourt pair who put up big numbers this year plus Matthews and Kelly are prospects that are strongly on the radar of us at Prep Hoops and coaches at the college level. Kelly is a wing and Matthews is a big that many of you have seen have fantastic games for the Heat last year and the Hylanders this past winter. Both of them could grab the attention of many college coaches.
- Shooting! That’s Ryan Mazurek. We’ve seen him hit many of AAU baskets for ECI and the Heat at the arc and he will do the same for 43 Hoops. Ryan and Carter Uphus are prospects that the MIAC level will have their eyes on, and maybe others as well.
- This weekend this team will be in Iowa at the Midwest Live event along with several other Minnesota and Iowa squads. We have entered them at #6 in this week’s Minnesota rankings as they have a huge win but they’ve played just the three games (plus 43 Hoops didn’t have to face D1 with Matthew Hurt like others did). A strong showing this weekend will prove a lot, maybe even a jump to the top two or three spots in the rankings. Remember, they did beat a D1 Minnesota team that is loaded with top Minnesota players, regardless if Hurt was on the floor or not.
