Prospect Spotlight: Deon McKinney (2018)
A 6’2 shooting guard/small forward, Raytown South 2018 Deon McKinney is already turning heads this spring playing with KC Elite.
McKinney is an excellent perimeter defender who has great anticipation resulting in leading the team in steals, according to KC Elite coach AJ Green.
“I’m a great lock down defense and can shoot from anywhere on the floor,” McKinney said. “I bring motivation to the floor and show other players that I want it more than them.”
He averaged 8 points, 5 rebounds and three assists per game and got more run as the season wore on after playing sparingly early in the season. His play helped spark the Cardinals to a strong finish to the season.
He says he looks up to NBA stars Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Lebron James among others.
“I enjoy watching everybody because it shows what I need to get better at on the court,” he said.
McKinney says his father has been the biggest influence on his basketball career because he pushes me on and off the court and helps me with my game.
He is spending the offseason competing for Kansas Elite and says the experience has been a positive one so far.
“Playing with my summer team as been great we have a big summer team ahead of us,” he said. “I plan on focusing on during the off season is getting bigger muscle wise and working on my agility and shooting.”
McKinney has not yet heard from any colleges, but hopes a big summer will turn heads.
