Who Joined the 50-40-90 Club in Indiana?
One of the toughest statistical feats to reach in basketball over the course of a season is the 50-40-90 mark; that’s going a whole season shooting 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from deep, and perhaps the toughest task of them all, connecting on 90 percent of your free throw attempts.
In order to be eligible for the feat, one must have made at least 45 shots from the floor, have at least 8 three-pointers made, and have 20 made free throws.
Last year, as a junior, Marian University commit Christian Stewart was the only person to meet the requirements with the needed percentages. Stewart averaged 18.7 points a game and made 107/213 from the floor, 48/98 from behind the arc, and 111/124 from the charity stripe.
This year there was an astounding four players reach the club. One of the toughest statistical feats over the course of the season showcases the type of shooters that Indiana has. Without further ado, here are this year’s 50-40-90 club members.
Jacob Redding (Fort Wayne Carroll) – 116/226 FG, 43/95 3FG, 81/89 FT
The senior who plans to walk on at the University of Louisville came close to not making the club but snuck on there with a 51/45/91 split. He averaged 16.5 points a game with a season high of 33 in a win against Huntington North. One of the premier shooters in Northern Indiana really showcased his scoring prowess this year.
Sam DeVault (Evansville Memorial) – 123/219 FG, 31/76 3FG, 29/32 FT
As a sophomore it is really special to have a shooting split of 56/41/91 but the smooth stroke of DeVault got it done. He scored 13.3 points a game but everything he did was really efficient. This year should have given him tons of confidence going into next year.
Jack Davidson (Hamilton Southeastern) – 90/171 FG, 45/83 3FG, 95/105 FT
The sharpshooter at HSE will be taking his talent to Crawfordsville next year as he will attend Wabash College. Davidson had a shooting split of 54/53/90 this year to help HSE to a 21-6 record. He isn’t overly athletic but knows how to find the open spot to be able to shoot the ball at a high clip.
Spencer Piercefield (Center Grove) – 88/174 FG, 60/134 3FG, 61/65 FT
The sophomore scored 11.6 points a game while shooting a tremendous percentage. His free throw percentage was outrageously good with a split of 51/45/94. He was relied on as Center Grove’s shooter and he delivered. He shot way more threes than twos but was efficient at both. Piercefield will look to have the same success next year as he did this year.
