Grassroots Preview: Iowa Prep
Our grassroots preview series continues with Iowa Prep. Tim Schuring directs this program comprised largely of players from northeast Iowa, and he joined us to help break down his high school level teams. Below you’ll find rosters, their schedule, some of Schuring’s thoughts on each group, as well as a few thoughts of my own.
17U
Head coach: Tim Schuring
Name | Height | School |
Parker Ingamells | 5-11 | Hudson |
Sam Goodman | 6-0 | Western Dubuque (2019) |
Cale Snedden | 6-3 | Mount Vernon |
Nick Leopold | 6-2 | Mount Vernon |
Jordan Magnani | 6-0 | Mount Pleasant |
Zach Martinek | 6-4 | West Fork (2019) |
Jonathan Ita | 6-2 | Mount Pleasant |
Kieran Kohorst | 6-4 | Mount Pleasant |
Ryan Miller | 5-10 | North Linn |
Alec Oberhauser | 6-5 | Aplington-Parkersburg |
Codey Hicks | 6-4 | Janesville |
Adam Waskow | 6-6 | North Linn |
Schuring says: “Ryan Miller, North Linn, it’s his third year in the program. Key component to North Linn’s state run in 2017. Great shooter from 3 and a really tough kid.
Jordan Magnani, Mount Pleasant. Second leading scorer for the Panthers this year. Awesome IQ.
Nick Leopold, Mount Vernon. Stats weren’t great this past season, but he plays for a great high school program. He can play – handles, shoots, vision, IQ.
Alec Oberhauser, Aplington-Parkersburg. Long and can really shoot it.
Zach Martinek, West Fork. Sophomore playing up. Really skilled.”
Tony’s take: There are three players that I’m really excited about from this group, and they’re all big, long wings who can bring different things to the table. Alec Oberhauser was one of the most under-control players I saw during the high school season. He’s a 6-5 point-forward who handles the ball and is a great passer. Zach Martinek is a skilled scorer with the ability to score at all three levels. And Nick Leopold has length and can do a bit of everything on the floor. Add in some shooting with guys like Ryan Miller and Jordan Magnani, a bit of toughness from Adam Waskow and Kieran Kohorst, and I think there is the potential here to surprise some people this summer. Interesting blend of players.
16U
Head coach: Eric Karius
Name | Height | School |
Josh Ollendieck | 5-10 | Cedar Falls (2020) |
Tate Johnson | 6-1 | Cedar Falls |
Spencer Hoff | 6-2 | Janesville |
Dillon Arndt | 5-9 | Oelwein |
Michael Sweeney | 6-2 | Waukon |
Mason Abbas | 6-3 | Cedar Falls |
Devin Baas | 6-4 | Denver |
Austin Marshek | 6-0 | Lone Tree |
Sean Geertsma | 6-1 | Independence |
Matthew Jordebrek | 6-5 | Cedar Rapids Xavier |
Tyler Reeder | 6-5 | Independence |
Noah Guillaume | 6-8 | Mount Vernon |
Ben Weber | 6-9 | Dubuque Senior |
Schuring says: “Sean Geertsma, Independence. Really skilled, one of Indee’s leading scorers in 2017.
Michael Sweeney, Waukon. May be the most talented young man on the 16s. WILL NOT BE PLAYING until July due to surgery on a torn labrum. Strong, can really get to the rim!
Three young men from Cedar Falls that grew and really came on late in their high school seasons:
Mason Abbas, key starter for their sophomore team. Versatile player that can play 1-4 positions.
Tate Johnson, shooter! Mom and dad both played at Morningside when they were NCAA DII.
Josh Ollendieck, freshman playing with the 16s. Point guard with nice handles and ability to score from all three levels. Still needs to add strength.”
Tony’s take: This team has a good bit of size for a 16U team, with four players at 6-5 or taller. Freshman point guard Josh Ollendieck is probably the player I’m most looking forward to getting a look at. He’s a skilled player who can impact the game in a number of ways. I’m looking forward to learning more about the rest of this group.

Matthew Franzen | 6-1 | Decorah |
Kole Tupa | 5-9 | Center Point-Urbana |
Tanner Weichers | 6-4 | AGWSR, Ackley |
Schuring says: “Tanner Lukavsky, West Branch. Varsity starter for West Branch in 2016-17.
Alex Wade, Center Point-Urbana. Part-time starter for CP-U during 2016-17 season.
Matthew Franzen, Decorah. Late bloomer and probably the most improved player on this group. Can really shoot it.”
Tony’s take: From the looks of it, this team will be looking to run to make up for a lack of size. They’ve got a few players with varsity experience, which will help. Looking forward to seeing this team play and learning more about them.
