Future Stars Camp: Standout Guards (Part I)
2019 Andrew Curran, 5’10 SG (Ottumwa)
Ottumwa’s leading scorer from a season ago, this young scoring guard was showcasing his ability to make shots from mid-range and deep, and will be in line for two more monster seasons with the Bulldogs.
2019 Jake Hilmer, 5’10 PG (North Linn)
Predictably, Hilmer was not only one of the best point guards at the camp, but one of the best players, period. Even when he’s having an “off” game scoring the ball, he makes an impact in other ways, he’s the best at that. And he won’t stay “off” for long, Hilmer always gets his.
2018 Lucas Duax, 6’2 G (Lucas Duax)
This kid was phenomenal in the skills sessions and live game play. He’s got some nice size and his handles are fluid. If he gets free for a jumper it’s likely he’ll knock it down. And he can create for himself, as evidenced by his shake-and-bake then 17-footer to win a sudden-death game. Clutch.
2018 Griff Clark, 5’10 G (Cedar Rapids Prairie)
One of the smartest players in the state, expect Clark’s assist-to-turnover ratio to be very good next season. He can turn it into another gear when attacking the hoop, and is one of the state’s most skilled and creative finishers at the rim.
2020 Cooper Medinger, 5’9 G (Dubuque, Senior)
He’s small, but makes up for that with skill and toughness. He’ll be a sophomore at Senior next season, and could make an impact as an underclassman with one of the state’s most talented teams. He was raining in triple after triple, and gets to the hoop deceivingly well.
2018 Cade Daugherty, 6’2 G (Bellevue)
We were blown away with this kid’s ability, and he dropped 24 points in the first game of the day while flashing a very diverse skill-set. His handles are top-notch, and he’s big and strong enough top get to the rim, but also a very capable jump-shooter. He’ll be bumped up in the next 2018 rankings.
2021 Keaton Kutcher, 5’11 G (Mount Vernon)
He came out and dominated right away in live game play, we checked the roster and were flabbergasted to see he was an eighth-grader. He’ll make an impact right away with the varsity next season due to his ability to score; both at the rim and from deep.
2019 Casey Kleemeier, 5’10 G (Winterset)
With a strong build and decent quickness, Kleemeier is a solid defender and is able to absorb contact well at the rim. His jumper was on and off on Saturday, but he can continue to hone that skill this summer with Kingdom Hoops.
2020 Ozzie Meiborg, 5’11 G (CR Jefferson)
This freshman combo-guard was flashing some tight handles, and used it effectively to get by his man and score at the rim or create for others. He could make an impact with the Jefferson J-Hawks as a sophomore next winter. In the meantime he’ll be hoopin’ with Iowa Mavs 15U.
