Arizona 2017 Rankings: Still Available – Point Guard
The 2017 has some very talented guards with the likes of Alex Barcello and Saben Lee ready to play at Arizona and Vanderbilt. In addition, another couple of names to watch are Dre Marin, SUU commit, and KJ Smith, Pacific commit. However, there are a number of other talented point guards who are still available. Here is a comprehensive look at the best point guards still available in the class of 2017.
2017 Available Point Guards: New to the Board
Holland Woods 5’10 PG Apollo
Woods is a recent addition to the best point guard available list as he reopening is recruitment recently. Initially, he was committed to attend and play at Portland State. However, after the school decided to go in another direction with the coaching staff, Woods has decided to look around. Woods can definitely play at the next level. He made a living at the high school level due to his ability to find teammates and shoot the mid-range jumper. Woods will be a highly sought after commodity.
Projection: Woods is a mid to low NCAA Division-I prospect.
Marcus Shaver 6’1 PG Shadow Mountain
After playing for one of the best teams that Arizona has seen in a long time with Shadow Mountain, Shaver made the decision to seek out other interests. He has decommitted from UC Santa Barbara and is exploring his options. Shaver might be the best player in the 2017 class at creating a shot for himself. He shoots the basketball at a really high level and can do it in an array of ways.
Projection: Shaver, much like Woods, is a mid to low NCAA Division-I prospect.
Available Point Guards: Best of the Rest
Virshon Cotton 6’1 PG Hillcrest
Cotton is a good athlete with a solid build and a good feel for the game. He can do a little bit of everything on the offensive end and is a tough on ball defender. He also provides good size for a point guard and has good lateral quickness. Cotton enjoyed a successful tenure with Hillcrest as the group finished in the top 8 in the country. He should see a lot of interest as he is looking to play some of the club season as an unsigned senior.
Projection: Cotton can play at the NCAA Division-I level, but might fall to the Division-II level and be a gem.
Donald Carter 6’0 PG Cesar Chavez
Carter is a physical point guard with good vision and change of direction. He is hard nosed and can play tough on ball defense. His ability to shoot the basketball from deep and be physical with the ball on the floor are huge bonuses. He can contribute immediately to a number of teams at the right level. Carter has earned the right to be on the best available point guard list and should play at the next level.
Projection: Carter is a mid to high NCAA Division-II or NAIA Division-I prospect.
Cody Carmichael 5’9 PG Ironwood
Carmichael might be the fastest player in the entire state. When he decides to get from point A to point B, he absolutely flies. He has improved tremendously in getting by the first defender and making reads on the help side. He improved his assist totals by almost 2 assists per game en route to breaking Ironwood’s all time assist record. In addition, he is great at anticipating on defense which led to him averaging over 3 steals per game. He is a sneaky athlete due to his speed and vertical leap.
Projection: Carmichael is planning on going on a two year mission; however, upon return, he could land at an NAIA Division-I or NCAA Division-II program and have a lot of success.
