2018 Rankings Update
With grassroots basketball underway and the high school season coming to a conclusion, a number of players have made a name for themselves. The 2018 Rankings highlights a class that is loaded with size and athleticism. Here are a couple of the standouts.
2018 Rankings: Old #1 Recaptures the Crown
Timmy Allen 6’6 SF Red Mountain (Compton Magic)
Tevy Jones and Timmy Allen have gone back and forth in regards to being the top ranked prospect for the class of 2018. However, the emergence of Allen into the lineup at Red Mountain made an astronomical change to the complexion of the team. During this season, Allen demonstrated that he has the ability to play an array of positions and utilize his size and length to his benefit. As it currently stands, Allen is the top prospect in the class.
Tevy Jones 6’5 SG Chandler (Cal Supreme)
As for Jones, if Allen is 1a, Jones is 1b. Jones is a walking double-double who has a really high ceiling and will play this game at a remarkably high level in the years to come. His progression from being a junior to a senior and getting more comfortable with his 2nd year coaching staff will be essential to his success this next season.
2018 Rankings: The Under 6’0 Club
Bryson Mewhinney 5’11 PG Sunnyslope (AZU) –
Length and height separate this class as there is not a single player ranked in the top 20 who is listed at below 6’0. In fact, Bryson Mewhinney, who is fresh off of his state championship campaign at Sunnyslope is the top ranked player who is under 6’0. Furthermore, Mewhinney has a shifty jab step and a solid mid-range jumper. His ability to attack the paint and create for his teammates also sets him apart. Despite being under 6’0, he has good length and athleticism.
Josh Johnson 5’7 PG Maricopa (Team Zona) –
Johnson is an absolute stud. He led Maricopa to a strong season and a first round upset of Deer Valley. Johnson is a knock down shooter who seems to shoot the basketball at a higher percentage when the difficulty level of the shot is increased. He shoots it off of the dribble as well as any player in the state and he is capable of slashing.
Deven Breckner 5’7 PG Deer Valley (Team Harden) –
Breckner is one of the most skilled players in the entire state. He has a solid handle and a fundamentally sound jump shot. Moreover, he plays with a chip on his shoulder and does not fear anyone. Breckner is a solid prospect who rarely gets out worked and spends a great deal of time dedicated to his craft. Look for Breckner to have a breakout year this next season.
