Unsigned 2017 Players To Watch This Spring: Part I
As schools begin to re-evaluate their rosters amid the departures that inevitably occur after a season ends, the need to add late players to a class grows.
On that note, with the spring club season set to begin in earnest, we are examining some of the top unsigned 2017 players who are competing on the circuit this spring.
Note to coaches: These players will be participating at the Prep Hoops Spring Kick Off beginning, which runs Friday, April 7 to Sunday, April 9 in Thornton.
Titus Reed, 6-5 forward, Colorado Miners
Reed, a relative late bloomer, would be a steal for a Division II or III program. He played the four for Chatfield during their run to the 5A quarterfinals this season, but his athleticism and versatility as a defender could allow him to play, with good size, at the three. Reed has constant energy and loves to compete. He’s great at cutting and moving without the ball, and he attacks the glass on both ends.
Reed averaged 14.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game during his senior season with the Chargers. He shot an eye-popping 67 percent on two-point field goals, a product of his relentlessly putting himself into position around the basket.
Nick Holmes, 6-1 guard, Wyoming Power
After missing much of his senior season at Overland because of medical issues, the talented left-handed guard is looking for one more chance to show he can play at the next level. As he’s regained his conditioning, Holmes has shown that he can be a strong, energetic defender on or off the ball, and he has a quick first step to the rim.
Holmes, who could be the perfect juco project, has put in strong work on his mid-range game, both as a decision-maker with the ball and a shooter. At the Prep Hoops Stock Up Showcase in early March, he demonstrated good feel coming off pick-and-roll situations.
Holmes played only nine games last season, but his energetic nine-point performance in a second-round loss to the Far Northeast Warriors showed flashes of what he can bring to the court once fully healthy and conditioned.
