Top Rank Showcase Orlando Standouts: Part 4
The Top Rank Showcase held an event at The Big House in Tavares, Fla. on Saturday.
Just over 80 kids participated in the event run by founder Ashton West, who has partnered with Under Armour and worked his magic all afternoon. The coaches put the players through a training session shortly after check-in.
Then the fun started with scrimmages. Teams broke for lunch midway through the day and then more games took place. After that, the Top 20 and Top 40 finalists were announced and the dunk contest and 3-point shootout took place.
Both the Top 20 and Top 40 games were played at once to end the day. Prior to that, all three courts had games going on at once and the gym was filled with players, parents and several coaches watching the event.
Here is the fourth set of standouts that caught my eye.
2018 Jake Hershkowitz (Coral Glades)
Hershkowitz made plays alongside his group that included the likes of Braxton Bartlett and Cam Williams. At 6’0″, he’ll be a key offensive piece for Coral Glades this upcoming season. He’s a bright player who finds space against opposing defenses and he did that a lot at Top Rank.
2019 Rifen Miguel (West Oaks)
Big and strong. Those are the two main attributes that you notice with Miguel. The 6’8″ West Oaks forward can mix it up inside and he isn’t afraid to take contact. He was fouled often because he’s a load inside and he still found ways to score even after being hacked.
2019 Jeff Watson (Windermere Prep)
Windermere Prep is going to need some playmakers and for much of Saturday, Watson proved that he belonged. Even at 5’8″, the rising junior scored in bunches and maintained his confidence. He’ll get a ton of opportunities for the new look Lakers this upcoming season.
2018 Alec Sherman (Mitchell)
A two-year starter at Mitchell, Sherman plays with poise. The 6’5″ wing had flashy moments on attacks and he had a quick first step. He’s one of those kids that doesn’t wow you but will make a play that turns your head at times. Look for Sherman to have a banner year at Mitchell in the fall.
2017 Wyatt Poole (Winter Park)
A 6’10” center that isn’t talked about much. That’s Poole. He moved down from Chicago and really hasn’t drawn much attention. Lost in the shuffle that is a shame because he can drill long range jumpers, drive to the rack and get involved defensively. Poole will find a landing spot after his time on the AAU circuit is over.
2019 Robert Gomez (Springstead)
Gomez plays with true grit. He’s someone that I’ve seen take his training seriously at several events and the 6’1″ Springstead guard will benefit this upcoming season from it. He has a nice stroke from outside and I think with more opportunities, the better he’ll get.
