Final Score: Logansport 57 – Zionsville 66
The early stages of this one showed that it was going to be a good game till the end. At the end of the first quarter, neither team had really gotten anything going from the floor and it was tied 11-11. Coming out in the second quarter, it was a flurry of threes from Zionsville that started to stretch the lead. Riley Bertram and Isaiah Thompson lead the charge for the Eagles as they took a 33-24 lead into the half.
The third quarter was much of the same. Logansport was able to trim the lead to just two possessions at a couple moments but was never really back into the game. Zionsville was impressive with how they controlled the tempo and took great shots on every possession. Logansport trailed 46-42 heading into the final quarter because Matt Jennings was not going home easily.
The fourth quarter was full of excitement until the final two minutes. The teams went back and forth trading baskets. Hunter DeHaven got himself involved and made a difference on the inside in the second half as Zionsville had to rotate big men in and out. Free throws at the end of the game sealed the deal for the Eagles. Zionsville will play McCutcheon tonight for the Sectional Championship.
MVP: Isaiah Thompson (Zionsville)
Thompson was great for the Eagles in the upset. He was a threat at all three levels to score the ball and the zone didn’t slow him down. He was able to find openings and keep the defense off balance throughout the game. Isaiah finished with 27 points (3-5 2FG, 5-8 3FG, and 6-6 FT), 3 rebounds (2 defensive and 1 offensive), 4 assists, and 2 steals. This was a huge win for Zionsville who was not favored to win but pulled off the upset on the shoulders of their sophomore guard.
Best Offensive Performance: Isaiah Thompson (Zionsville)
Isaiah was lethal from just about anywhere on the court shooting 62% from the field (63% from deep) and 100% from the free throw line. He finished with a game high 27 points (3-5 2FG, 5-8 3FG, and 6-6 FT) and very easily could have had 30+ had he been aggressive late in the game when the team was shooting free-throw and layups to pull away. Not only did he have the game high in the scoring column, he also dished out 4 assists and found the openings in the Logansport zone all night.
Best Defensive Performance: Jalen Adaway (Logansport)
Adaway never really got involved on the offensive end of the floor but was able to help out his team on the defensive side. His length and athleticism bothered some of the shots for Zionsville around the rim. Jalen finished with 5 points (1-4 3FG and 2-2 FT), a game-tying high 9 rebounds (7 defensive and 2 offensive), 3 assists, a game high 3 blocks, and a game high 3 steals. His presence was noticeable on the defensive end of the floor. This game is one that he’d like to have back as Logansport put together a one loss season heading into this one.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Riley Bertram (Zionsville)
Riley was an impact player for Zionsville with his energy level and ability to make big shots in the second half. Bertram dove on the floor and won multiple loose balls for the Eagles tonight. He finished with 13 points (2-4 2FG, 3-5 3FG, and 0-1 FT), 2 offensive rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. He seemed to always make the big play when Zionsville needed it most in the second half. Big reason that Zionsville was able to pull off the upset.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Cole Gardner (Zionsville)
Gardner saw extended minutes in this one because of Alcock being in foul trouble for the majority of the game. Gardner didn’t stuff the stat sheet but he really put together a strong performance down low with his high energy and constant communication. Cole finished with 2 points (1-1 2FG), 2 defensive rebounds, 2 blocks, and he took the only charge of the game. If they can get that kind of energy from him for the remainder of the postseason, they will give McCutcheon a game tomorrow night.
Biggest Overall Impact: Matt Jennings (Logansport)
Matt Jennings was doing everything in his power to make sure that this wasn’t the last game of the season for Logansport. He had a level of focus beyond anyone else on the floor and he was determined to carry this team. Jennings finished with a team high 22 points (4-8 2FG, 3-12 3G, and 5-5 FT), 6 rebounds (5 defensive and 1 offensive), and a game high 6 assists. It seemed to be that every time he touched the ball, he was looking to make something happen on the offensive side of the floor. Although he didn’t shoot the ball well percentage wise, he made a major impact in the big moments by knocking down the shot.
Best Intangibles: Dominic Genco (Zionsville)
Genco did a little bit of everything for the Eagles last night. He boxed people out while his teammates got the rebound and he was all over the floor on loose balls. He contributed in multiple ways last night in the upset win. Dominic finished with 11 points (2-6 2FG, 0-1 3FG, and 7-8 FT), a team high 7 rebounds (6 defensive and 1 offensive), and dished out 4 assists. Genco played at the level he needed to last night to help Zionsville make it to the Sectional Championship.
Best Rebounder: Hunter DeHaven (Logansport)
Hunter DeHaven was working all night long. Logansport should have been giving him more looks because Zionsville could not keep him out of the paint. Dehaven finished well around multiple bodies down low and grabbed some tough rebounds. Hunter finished with 16 points (6-8 2FG and 4-5 FT), a game-tying high 9 rebounds (6 defensive and 3 offensive), and 1 block. He high-pointed many of his rebounds and had strong enough hands to rip some of them away from the opposition.
Best Underclassmen: Isaiah Thompson (Zionsville)
Isaiah did it all last night. He made timely shots and found open teammates in the Logansport zone. He worked along the baseline in the zone and also found himself with openings on the wing and top of the key. Thompson is a zone-buster and that is exactly what he helped Zionsville do last night. Matt Painter was in the building last night to watch both games and there’s a good chance he liked what he saw from the younger brother of his current point-guard.
Biggest Takeaway: Zionsville’s Shooting From Deep
Zionsville, as a team, shot the ball tremendously well last night from deep (10-20 3FG). Any open look they got seemed to be a guaranteed three points and even the crowd knew it. Logansport had a bigger following in terms of fans last night but Zionsville did a good job of keeping them out of the game by making shots consistently. Even when Logansport seemed to make a push, the Eagles countered with a basket to swing the momentum back in their favor.
