Continue ReadingThis was a strange game. At the end of one Lebanon led 8-0, or rather Trevor Lakes led since he scored every point. He made the first bucket of the second quarter to get into double digits before anyone else even scored. It was all Lebanon throughout as they won the low-scoring affair, 55-35.
Leading scorers: Lebanon: Trevor Lakes 22, Will Byrd 13. Western Boone: Lucas Morton 8, Peyton Young 7
MVP: Trevor Lakes (Lebanon)
Lakes started out hot scoring the first 10 points of the game. He made jumpers, threes and sealed in the paint to get easy layups. He really was on a roll and never really stopped. He didn’t play in the fourth quarter much at all and still had 22 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. A really good all-around performance for the Maryville (Mo.) commit.
Best offensive performance: Trevor Lakes (Lebanon)
I don’t like giving multiple “bests’ to the same guy but Lakes deserved it. He shot the ball really well and just played really good offense. He was getting teammates involved and finding guys and did it all in three quarters. 40% of your teams points is a good night especially if you score over 50 as a team.
Best defensive performance: Clayton Barber (Lebanon)
Barber was great on defense in this one getting four steals and taking two of them down and finishing at the other end. He has fast hands and reads the passes well. He’s the anchor of the defense and vocally leads them. Barber is one of the more built guards you’ll see and still is pretty quick.
Best off-the-bench performance: Carson Burtron (Lebanon)
Burtron was a starter early in the year but since has moved to be the first guy coming off the pine. He is a great relief for Byrd sliding him over to the two-guard spot where he is much better than on the ball. Burtron is a freshman who is rather long and can control the ball well. He scored five points and had four rebounds.
Key of the Game: Lebanon defense
Wasn’t really a play but Lebanon held Western Boone scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game. Anytime you can do this, you will win.
Best underclassman: Lucas Morton (Western Boone)
Morton is a sophomore that can really shoot it. He is really fast and that helped him out a ton on the cuts he was making. He has a good shot but he never got going in this game. Morton is only 5’8 but has NBA range. He can fill it up once he learns better ways to space himself and how to run off screens better. Only scored eight points but that was mainly a product of Lebanon’s defense.
Best under-the-radar performance: Trevor Boyne (Lebanon)
Boyne is a solid conributor. Not the most eye-catching, athletic, or smooth guy by any means but he’s tough. He ended without any points but had a few rebounds, an assist, and a couple blocks. His IQ is really high and he knows where to be so that the driver doesn’t ever have a clean shot.
Best rebounder: Garrett Miller (Western Boone)
Miller is a 6′ junior who they stick into the post position. He’s not the fastest or quickest guy but he had great hands. He hauled in eight rebounds and has really good hands. He does a great job of boxing out and seals his really well.
Best shooter: Will Byrd (Lebanon)
Byrd is a legit outside threat and while he didn’t show it in this game, he had really nice touch in the midrange continually shot faking and driving in a few steps before pulling up. He had 13 points and was 4-of-4 inside the arc and only took two outside shots because the defenders closed hard.
Best takeaway: Lebanon moves on to the Sectional 25 championship game. They face Tri-West who is 20-3. Lebanon is one of those losses as they knocked them off at home earlier this year. Lakes will have to have another big game and Will Byrd will have to step up. The big key to the game will be keeping Hendershot off the glass, Trevor Boyne did a great job earlier in the year on him matching his toughness and he will have to do that again this game.
