Continue ReadingIt was a low scoring affair even though both teams can really shoot the ball and in the semi-finals Crawfordsville held a 19-17 lead at the half after a flurry of three-pointers.
The talent level of Tri-West was just too much though as Crawfordsville fell 66-53 after hanging with them for all but about four minutes..
Leading scorers: Tri-West: Tyler Watson 20, Peyton Hendershot 18. Crawfordsville: Cameron Harris 21, Devin Guard 13.
MVP: Tyler Watson (Tri-West)
Watson had a slow first half but the best pure scorer on the floor got going in the second half. You could tell that the plan was to get him some buckets in the second half as he came right out and kept driving in to the lane. Crawfordsville did a great job on him doubling him at times in order to slow him down. He didn’t really force anything in the game.
Best offensive performance: Cameron Harris (Crawfordsville)
Harris is a guy I really like. He’s a 6’3ish, strong two-guard who can both shoot and drive. There are things he needs to work on but he still can score the ball pretty efficiently. He made a few threes and ended up leading all scorers with 21 points. Harris attacked the offensive glass as well and came down with two boards on that end of the court.
Best defensive performance: Peyton Hendershot (Tri-West)
A lot of people don’t like Hendershot because he is “tough”. I see a guy that loves basketball and wants to win more than anyone on the floor. He is 6’5 and superbly athletic. He is a guy that if he’s in the lane won’t make anything easy for the guy coming in. He finished with 14 rebounds and had three blocks. He committed to IU for football earlier this year..
Best off-the-bench performance: Jack Sommer (Crawfordsville)
Sommer came off the bench in order to help with ball-handling once Tri-West started to use a bit of pressure. He had a couple of turnovers but was a big improvement of what player he replaced. Not the biggest guy but an adept handler and saw the floor well. He also had his only three points on a n and-1 over Hendershot even though he gave up eight inches.
Play of the Game: Tri-West hitting their free throws.
Tri-West came up big and hit free throws down the stretch to put them in full control. Crawfordsville couldn’t do the same and that’s why they lost.
Best junior: Cameron Harris (Crawfordsville)
There weren’t any underclassmen that played (if they did none had any stats), so I want to highlight Harris again. Against the faster and stronger Tri-West he held his own. He kept hitting jumpers and getting to the rim. He’s a solid 3A player and will be a great D3/NAIA get and a solid D2 guy. Look for him to really take off this summer.
Best under-the-radar performance: James Gineris (Crawfordsville)
Generis played the point and played it pretty solid. Crawfordsville relied on him to break the pressure quite a bit and his handles showed. He shot it a few times from behind the arc but Tri-West was giving it to him. He dished a few assists out and led the team nicely.
Best clutch scorer: Matt Chinn (Tri-West)
Chinn is known as a three-point shooter. He made two big ones when the score was close and barely missed the game clincher which would have put Tri-West up by 11 with under four minutes to go. He missed, but in the end it didn’t matter because his previous two were ones that extended the lead a bit in the second half. Chinn has committed to Wabash College for basketball.
Best shooter: Devin Guard (Crawfordsville)
Guard has a really crisp shoot and comes into it really well. He is great off the catch and can come off screens and shoot it just as well. Guard gets squared up nicely and has a solid release point very high making him tough to block. Guard has committed to Wabash College for golf.
Best takeaway: Tri-West moves on to the Sectional championship to face Lebanon. Tri-West sits at 21-3 now and Lebanon was one of those losses, albeit in overtime. Lebanon has the guys to put up with the tough mentality of Tri-West so Tri-West will need their A-game. Watch for Watson and Hendershot to lead them but will need some other help if they want to advance to next Saturday.
