STATE TOURNAMENT: Class 4A All-Tournament Team
First Team
Most Outstanding Player: Connor McCaffery (Iowa City West)*
18.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.7 steals
Iowa’s top-ranked 2017 put together three solid games and was very workmanlike in each Trojan win. His jumper wasn’t falling as much as it regularly does, but because he’s 6-foot-6, McCaffery was able to dominate in the paint. The future Iowa Hawkeye was clearly the most dominant player for West last week.
Van Rees (Sioux City East)*
21.3 PPG, 6.7 RPG
Just a junior, Rees could have another crack at the state tournament next season. He was easily one of the best players at Wells Fargo Arena this season, going for a double-double in the quarters and finishing as the leading scorer in the 4A field.
Charley Crowley (Valley)*
17.3 PPG (71 FG%), 6.0 RPG
The future William Jewell power forward came away with a game-winning dunk against Des Moines North in the quarterfinals, then scored a co-tournament-high 25 points in the semis.
Devontae Lane (Iowa City West)*
15.3 PPG, 2.7 assists, 2.0 steals
He was option 1B for West, and was possibly the best defender in the tournament. If it wasn’t for Connor being so proficient, Lane would likely have been named “most outstanding player”.
Quinton Curry (Valley)*
13.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG
The Valley legend came away with the play of the tournament when he skied high for a mesmerizing block of North’s Tyreke Locure to help seal a quarterfinal win. Curry showed no ill-effects from last season’s his ACL surgery.
Second Team
Aidan Vanderloo (Sioux City East)
13.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 3.0 assists
Patrick McCaffery (Iowa City West)
10.0 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals
Derrick Diggins (Cedar Rapids Kennedy)
11.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG
Connor Gholson (Newton)
24 points, 5 rebounds in quarterfinal loss
Garrett Sturtz (Newton)
20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals
