Scouting and Highlights: Vincent Johnson (2017)
Vincent Johnson is a senior guard who played for Saginaw Arthur Hill. Standing at 6’1″, he’s more of a two-guard than a pure point guard. At this point, he would be effective for JuCo, D3 and NAIA schools looking for a scoring 2-guard who can play good defense. With development, however, I believe his ceiling is D2.
Here’s my take on Johnson’s game:
Strengths:
Finishing – This is easily the strongest part of his game. He’s got a soft touch around the rim. He’s capable of finishing through people, as well as double-clutching to avoid being blocked.
Shooting – He’s a solid catch-and-shoot player out to the three point line. He has good form and his shot is smooth. He can hit shots running off screens as well. With a little focus and work, he could effective as a pure shooter.
Steals – He generates a lot of easy offense off of jumping passing lanes for steals into fastbreak layups. He has good anticipation and doesn’t allow his attempts to jump passes to get him out of position defensively.
Getting open without the ball – While this is a skill that is generally overlooked by most, it is definitely a useful and important skill, especially for a shooter. Johnson does a good job running off screens or cutting to get himself open for easy shots or layups. This helps him make an impact offensively while not having to dominate the ball.
Areas For Development:
Playmaking – While his handles and playmaking abilities aren’t below average, they aren’t the strongest part of his game either. Improving his ability to break a defender down 1-on-1 as well as his vision/passing ability will take Johnson from a number two or three option to a star.
Vertical – At 6’1″, he will never be the biggest player on the court. While his athleticism is certainly good enough to still be effective at the college level, an increase in vertical or explosiveness would take his game to the next level. Adding the ability to finish above the rim would make Johnson a versatile threat offensively.
