Scouting and Highlights: Lamar Norman (2018)
Lamar Norman is one of the top juniors in the state. At 6’2″, he’s also one of the most athletic players in the state. He already has a couple MAC offers, but he is more than athletic enough to play at the high-major level. His potential is obvious given his athleticism, so it is safe to say the sky is the limit.
Here’s my take on Norman’s game:
Strengths:
Athleticism – His combination of elite speed and elite leaping ability makes him one of the most electrifying players in the state. He’s capable of catching an outlet pass and simply out-running the defense for an easy layup. He’s also capable of driving through the lane and dunking over taller defenders.
Finishing – While it’s common sense that it’s easier to finish the closer you get to the rim, Norman’s soft touch around the rim should not be understated. However, it does help that he’s capable of elevating to the level of the rim any given finish.
Steals – He’s very good at jumping passing lanes for steals into easy layups. He also has knack for stripping opponents on-ball or on help. While some may think gambling for steals hurts a team, the amount of easy offense Norman creates for himself and his teammates off steals more than makes up for this.
Shooting – While he may not be known as a sniper, he’s definitely not a bad shooter either. Perhaps the most accurate way to describe his shooting ability is above average. He’s capable of beating you from three or from midrange, as well as off the catch or the dribble.
Areas For Development:
On-ball defense – While there’s no doubt that Norman is great at anticipating and stealing passes, some question his ability to sit down and shut down an opponent 1-on-1. He has the athletic ability to be a great defender, so, with some work, he could easily become an elite defender.
Strength – While Norman is fast enough to blow by defenders even at the highest levels, adding some muscle would help him become a complete player. Added strength would help him both offensively and defensively.
