Scouting and Highlights: Jeremy Pung (2017)
Previously, Pung was committed to Lawerence Tech, but after the recent coaching change, Pung has re-opened his recruitment. After re-opening his recruitment, he received an offer from Lake Superior State and should receive more interest in the near future. At 6’7″, he’s an old-school, back-to-the-basket big who does everything around the rim well. Any teams D2 and below looking for a reliable post presence should take note of Pung’s availability.
Here’s my take on Pung’s game:
Strengths:
Post-Scoring – Pung has good strength and footwork around the rim. Combine that with a nice touch around the rim and he can put up points efficiently around the rim.
Rebounding – At 6’7″, Pung won’t have the height advantage over most other big guys. However, he makes up for it with both strength and good positioning. He seems to have good judgement as to where the ball will bounce before it hits the rim, allowing him to be in better position than his opponents.
Strength – His strength allows him to play with a high level of physicality. This physicality allows him to play bigger than his height. His strength allows him to finish through people, something he does efficiently.
Post-Defense – In general, Pung is a well-rounded post player. This includes his defense. While he may not be an elite rim protector, he does a good job defending the basket. He uses his strength to stand his ground against bigger/stronger opponents. He is a smart defender, as he doesn’t jump on head fakes often and is capable of taking charges. Most importantly, he avoids foul trouble for the most part.
Areas For Development:
Perimeter Defense – At 6’7″, sometimes he will need to matchup with opponents who are capable of playing on the perimeter. He will need to be able to defend this at the next level.
Jump-shot – Developing a jumper out to the three point would change Pung’s game completely. He would go from an all-around post-player to a multi-dimensional offensive threat as well as a solid defender. This is the next step for him.
