Recruiting Report: Malcolm Clayton (2018)
With still one season left to make his mark on the CIML, Fort Dodge point guard Malcolm Clayton could be one of the state’s best point guards next season.
Iowa’s 42nd-ranked 2018, Clayton pieced together a fine junior season with the Dodgers, going for a team-high 14.6 points and 4.0 assists per game, while also pulling down 4.1 boards per contest.
He mentioned two JuCo programs that have been showing some interest.
“I’ve had Iowa Lakes talk to me after a couple games this season, and there’s a JuCo in Wisconsin that’s talking to me, University of Wisconsin-Rock County,” said Clayton.
This spring and summer he’ll play with Kingdom Hoops and AFES for his 17U season, and is hopeful he can play in front of plenty of college hoops coaches
“I’m hoping that whatever team I play for, that we can make it to the finals or some of those later rounds, just so we can play in front of those college coaches,” he said. “I want to be seen more, and have colleges from all levels see me.”
With plus length and a strong build, Clayton has been one of the more productive point guards in 4A the past two seasons. He mentioned what improvements he’s made since we spoke with him last summer.
“I’ve worked on knowing when to shoot and what are good shots and bad shots, and late in quarters when to shoot and stuff like that. And I learned how to set up my teammates better, and my pull-up jump-shot has been one of my go-to moves,” said Clayton, who reflected on his season.
“I thought I had a pretty good junior season. I could have improved on my defense more, and I could have been a better floor general.”
This spring, Clayton says the goal is to get bigger and more athletic, as well as improve his guard skills.
“I want to work on my shooting range this summer, and I also want to work on my handles, to make sure I can break down my defender and be more of a playmaker,” said Clayton. “And I just want to get a lot stronger and jump higher.”
