Recruiting Report: John Fierstein (2017)
John Fierstein was without a doubt an instrumental figure in Quince Orchard’s run to the state title game this season. The versatile forward prides himself on his ability to impact the game in a variety of ways, and did just that for the Cougars in his final campaign.
“I think I picked up a basketball at six months and I don’t think I’ve put it down since,” joked Fierstein about the first memory he has of the game. “I like to think I’m a point forward. So even if I’m not scoring I like to think I’m affecting the game in different ways. I like to think I can kind of do a little bit of everything. I think I can shoot. Put the ball on the floor. Find open teammates. I think i can do a little bit of it all.”
In Quince Orchard’s improbable win over Wise in the state semifinals, Fierstein led in scoring and rebounding. He exhibited confidence in his decision making, and that’s something Fierstein believes he’s really worked hard to improve.
“I’ve gotten a lot a lot better deciding when to pull up i the middle of the lane and when to pass,” Fierstein stated. “Last year i might try to force things make a bad shot. I think I’ve gotten a lot better this year of making the right play in the lane.”
Fierstein is a great student in the classroom, and boasts a 3.5 GPA. Shepherd has offered him a scholarship, and Fierstein is also being recruited by Salisbury, St. Mary’s, Catholic.
“I think I’m a point forward. In a pinch I can play PG. I did that growing up. If I have a mismatch, I can also go down low and post up,” said Fierstein when asked to describe his game. “Need to work on my outside shot. Shot a lot better last year, but I still have a lot of confidence in my outside shot. Just gotta keep working on it.”
Fierstein mentioned that he might come to a decision about which college to attend sometime in April. What he bring to a college program?
“I think I’m a smart basketball player. I think I can do whatever a team needs. I think I have a high IQ. In a pinch, I can help the team do whatever needs to be done.”
