Recruiting Report: Cass Phillips (2018)
Lakeland’s 6-foot-9 power forward Cass Phillips recently picked up his first scholarship offer, and with a critical 17U spring ahead, he could be picking up several more soon.
Currently Michigan’s 24th-ranked 2018, Phillips mentioned which schools are in contact with him right now, and discussed his Spring Arbor (NAIA) offer.
“I’m still constantly talking to Ferris State. I’ve been talking to coaches up at Central Michigan still, and I’ve been offered a full athletic scholarship up at Spring Arbor,” said Phillips, who detailed the offer.
“That came last month after one of their coaches came and watched me play. They were talking to me a little before then and had seen some film.”
Though he’s pleased to have his first offer on the table, Phillips says that a Division I offer is his goal this offseason. And he mentioned one in-state school in particular that he sees as a nice fit.
“I think I’m striving for D1 programs, my goal is to play at Central Michigan,” he said. “I think that’s a great school and that would be a great program for me.”
With great size and a developing skill-set, Phillips is working to become as diverse of a big-man as he can.
“Basically, this last year I’ve been working on expanding my game as far as outside shooting,” said Phillips. “And working on more than just posting up around the basket and expanding my game to beyond the arc as well.”
He’ll continue to hone his perimeter skill-sets, as well as sharpening his post-skills this spring and summer while playing Greenwood Elite 17U.
“I’m expecting to have a lot of exposure playing with Greenwood, they’ve done a lot for a lot of athletes in the past,” said Phillips. “I’m really looking forward to being showcased at some of the bigger tournaments we go to, like in Las Vegas and places like that.”
