Recruiting Report: Brett Erwin (2018)
One of the state’s more intriguing big-men, Davenport West’s 6-foot-8 center Brett Erwin could soon be a hot commodity with area Division II and NAIA programs.
But if you want to see him play, you’ll have to wait until next high school season.
The talented center had played with Quad City Elite during past offseasons, but he’s going to exclusively play baseball this spring and summer instead.
Still, he says basketball is what he’ll likely pursue at the next level.
“I really enjoy playing them both, so I’m looking forward to seeing what what opportunities I can get. But I’ve been more successful at basketball up to this point, so maybe leaning towards that,” said Erwin, who highlighted what recruitment he’s seen come in so far.
“Nothing too serious so far. I have gotten letters from Drake and Waldorf and stuff like that, but a lot of emails have gone to my coach, like D2 and D3 stuff. I know Southwest Minnesota State is one that is interested in recruiting me.”
With plus height and an ability to put the ball in the hoop at a high clip, Erwin projects to be a formidable college option.
He explained his playing style to PHIA.
“I just really like to use my height to my advantage, obviously that’s the big thing for me; I’m taller than just about anyone in my conference,” said Erwin.
“I like to stay aggressive on the rebounds and play efficiently by starting close to the rim. And on the defensive end I just need to protect the rim and not let guys get easy buckets and things like that.”
Erwin just wrapped up his junior season with the Falcons and he was good, averaging 15.3 points on 59 percent shooting, 2.3 blocks and 9.4 rebounds per game.
“I played with a lot of confidence, I wasn’t timid going to the rim, and it helped me take my offense to a whole new level,” he said. “I’d like to up my free-throw percentage next season, I shot really well in practice but it didn’t translate to the games this season.”
Though he won’t be playing grassroots ball this spring and summer, Erwin is still focused on getting some recruitment to come his way for hoops.
“I’ll do what I have to do, I’m going to take the ACT and then I’ll be sending stuff out to colleges hopefully, with the help of my coaches and parents and everyone else,” said Erwin.
