Prospect Spotlight: Jerry Higgins (2018)
Class of 2018 point guard Jerry “Gene” Higgins and Villa Angela-St. Joseph (21-6) motored in to the Division III Final Four.
Friday morning VASJ meets Fairland (25-1) at 10:45 A.M. in the Jerome Schottenstein Center.
“It has been a success so far,” said Jerry Higgins. “We are in a playoff run and we are trying to finish things off.”
For Higgins the playoff run is a perfect opportunity to showcase his team’s capacity for winning. The junior, Higgins plays a prominent role.
“I think I am averaging like 16.5 points, 5.2 assist a game, 4.0 rebounds a game, and 2.0 steals a game.”
Jerry Higgins carries a lot of responsibilities for the squad.
“Playing time I play the whole game basically,” said Jerry Higgins. “I basically do everything. Get on the ball and create shots for other teammates.”
AAU
Jerry Higgins played last summer with Ohio Basketball Club 16u. After the summer, PrepHoops.com/ohio writer Anthony Garcia caught up with the OBC coach about Higgins’ play.
Jerry/Gene Higgins (2018), 5’9” G, VASJ High School
Offer from Fairmont State (WV).
Other interest from Akron, St. Francis University (PA), Army West Point, and Wheeling Jesuit (WV).
This AAU season should be more of the same, except stars like Robby Carmody and Dwayne Cohill are expected to draw even more power programs to their games.
“I am playing with Ohio Basketball Club,” said Higgins on the upcoming summer.
Recruitment
Jerry Higgins has a few early options, but would like to expand the scope.
“Cornell is talking to me,” said Jerry Higgins.” “I just got my transcripts (to them). West Point has been talking to me. Ashland (DII). Loyola. There have been a few schools.”
Higgins was not able to visit any college practices or games this season. Because he played on the football team too, his free time has been limited since August.
Higgins also played football in the fall, but he isn’t devoted to that sport the same way.
“I am just trying to play basketball.” said Higgins of college plans.
What other schools would Jerry Higgins like to hear from?
“Notre Dame,” said Higgins. “I have a 4.3 grade point average. I am open to everything.”
