The New Realignment 2A & 3A Way Too Early Preview
Every three years we have a realignment that is conducted by the UHSAA mainly due to the increase in enrollment as well as the decrease in enrollment at some school. It still makes no sense to add a new classification in my opinion. They should have just kept the top 3 teams as automatic bids in each classification and made them larger and chosen the best at-large teams in each classification based on resume.
Here is a way too early look at next years teams and way too early ranking.
2A
- Layton Christian
- Beaver
- Enterprise
- Waterford
- North Summit
Region 16: Altamont, Duchesne, Layton Christian, North Summit, St. Joseph, Utah Military Academy
There are two teams that will compete next year in North Summit and Layton Christian, don’t expect anything else from that region.
Region 17: APA Draper, APA West Valley, Merit, Rockwell, Rowland Hall, Waterford
This region is a region that can go either way as it is full of sub-par teams that have under preformed in the past. Although Waterford was very good this year they lose the core of their team.
Region 18: Beaver, Enterprise, Gunnison, Kanab, Millard, North Sevier, Parowan
Beaver is well coached and Enterprise can compete. These two teams will probably have the best shot at knocking-out a school like Layton Christian.
Players to watch:
2019 6’0 G Micah Petty (LCA), 2019 6’2 G Hayden Blomquist (N.Summit), 2018 6’0 G Kade Lamborn (Duchesne),
3A:
- South Sevier
- Judge Memorial
- Richfield
- Morgan
- Summit Academy
Region 13: Grantsville, Judge Memorial, Morgan, South Summit and Summit Academy
All five teams in this region have had past success. Morgan will have experience, Judge is well coached and developing talent, Grantsville will finally have competition, South Summit will play hard regardless who or where they play and Summit Academy has a few younger players that have been good that will be seniors next year.
Region 14: American Leadership, Carbon, Delta, Juab, Maeser Prep, Providence Hall and Union
This region could have a multi-loss champion as all teams in this region have played well with underclassmen. ALA is well coached and has shown strides of improvement, Carbon needs consistency this upcoming year, Juab can compete in this region, Maeser Prep is starting to find their identity, Providence Hall is well coached and is developing into a contender and Union will also be able to compete at this level.
Region 15: Emery, Grand, Manti, North Sanpete, Richfield, South Sevier and San Juan
This will be a competitive region. Emery will have to figure out a way to play without Bowdie and Koby. This region could also see the most fireworks with match-ups between Emery, Richfield, Manti and South Sevier. Whoever comes out of this region might be the team hoisting the trophy when it’s all said and done.
Players to watch:
2018 5’10 SG Caleb Barton (S.Sevier), 2018 6’1 G Boston Douglas (Providence Hall), 2018 6’7 Jay Gilson (Summit Academy), 2018 6’1 G Cade Russell (Morgan), 2018 6’1 G Parker Edgington (Judge)
