Metro Challenge Scouting: Underclassmen Part 1
HYATTSVILLE, MD — The fourth annual Metro Challenge showcased 60 of the best prospects from the greater Baltimore/Washington D.C. region at DeMatha Catholic High School on Saturday for a day of competition and exposure. It is time for our detailed scouting report on the event. Here is part one of our underclassmen scouting report! All stats referenced were provided courtesy of http://www.legitstats.com/
G/F RJ BLAKNEY | ST. MARIA GORETTI ‘19
RJ Blakney is maturing physically and mentally, and it showed in his performance at the Metro Challenge. The long & lanky 6’6” wing is a graceful athlete, and an athletic finisher. Blakney exhibits great body control, and rebounds well from his position.
G/F MARVIN PRICE | PATTERSON ‘19
The first thing that stood out about Marvin Price was his improved fitness. Price was great in transition. He fills lanes correctly, and is a crafty finisher. The broad-shouldered 6’5 wing displays a good feel for the game, and can defend on the perimeter as well as in the post. Price is a good paint getter, and is deceptively quick off his feet. Price is a 4.0 student as well.
G CASEY MORSELL | ST. JOHN’S ‘19
Casey Morsell is one of the best defenders in the area, and he showed why on Saturday. The long-limbed 6’2 guard led the camp in steals, and collected his fair share of rebounds as well. Morsell is an unselfish and versatile guard offensively. He looks ahead in transition, and takes what the defense gives him. Morsell is very active defensively, and can guard several different positions. Morsell will need to get more consistent with his perimeter shooting, but he can/will take/make important shots.
PG JOSHUA WALLACE | ST. MARY’S ANNAPOLIS ‘19
Joshua Wallace is an absolute pest defensively. He’s also a good ball handler, and can thread the needle. Wallace is a vocal presence at the lead guard spot, and takes pride in communicating to his teammates. Needs to work on finishing around the basket and strength, but is a speedster. Plays with good pace, but just needs to learn how to mix up the tempo a bit.
F/C JASON MURPHY | CHAPELGATE CHRISTIAN ‘19
Jason Murphy is the ideal big for a camp setting, and quite frankly for most division one schools. He does needs to get stronger, but there’s no denying Murphy’s work ethic and determination. At 6’9, Murphy boasts good length, and intriguing body control. Murphy is a good athlete with more than adequate mobility. Murphy is equally effective at protecting the rim, and hedging/guarding ball-screens.
G MICHAEL SUMNER | OXON HILL ‘20
Michael Sumner impressed in a variety of areas at the Metro Challenge. The D.C. Premier product is very smooth with the ball, and has good size. Sumner is very long, and can handle pressure well enough to play on the ball, but is explosive and confident enough to defend and play on the wing as well. Sumner can shoot from the perimeter, and runs the floor well in transition.
