McDonald’s Tuesday Practice Standouts
PrepHoops Network was in the house for the McDonald’s All-American Game Tuesday Practice. We breakdown what prospects stood out!
PG Trevon Duval (IMG Academy, FL)
The nation’s top point guard wasn’t quite himself during the Monday practice as he was struggling with an injury. Looked much better on Tuesday. Duval is an explosive lead guard with the rock in his hands. Tremendous burst of speed attacking off the bounce and has blow by speed in the open floor. Gets to the rim beating his defender in one on one situations. Shows vision as a passer. Russell Westbrook type scoring point guard.
C Wendell Carter (Pace Academy, GA – Duke)
Carter is one of the thicker and more polished post players in this class. The Duke commit made an impact on the defensive end. Really competed against Bamba who was dominant on Monday. Carter altered a couple of his shots and showed he has more lateral mobility than you would think as he defended well in ball screen situations. Offensively quality footwork with a great spin move.
C Mohamed Bamba (Westtown, PA)
Bamba also had his moments. The 6’11” center might be my favorite player in this class. Elite length and athleticism on the interior. Dunks literally everything in the paint! He had a couple highlights including a reverse dunk in traffic. Also grabbed an offensive board, did a spin move, and flushed it with two hands. Elite shot blocker with timing and anticipation. Top 5 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
SF Jarred Vanderbilt (Victory Prep, TX – Kentucky)
Vanderbilt continues to impress! The 6’8” Kentucky commit has versatility that is off the charts. Can play and defend multiple positions on the floor. The jump shot has been extremely consistent this week. Hit a nice step back to go along with some other jumpers. Outstanding passer especially in the open floor. Can also be a mismatch on the block as he had a high/low finish.
SG Collin Sexton (Pebblebrook, GA – Alabama)
Sexton is an elite scoring combo guard. Explosive off the bounce with an elite first step getting to the rim. When he gets a head of steam behind him he will not be stopped. Finishes well in traffic against elite rim protectors. Pushes it in the open floor with his speed and is an underrated passer. Love the intensity, motor, and passion this kid plays with!
C DeAndre Ayton (Hillcrest Prep, AZ – Arizona)
Ayton is the top big man in the class and he showed why on Tuesday. The 7’0” center is extremely powerful around the hoop. He has a strong frame and broad shoulders. Even against elite post players he physically overpowers them on the interior and carves out space to do work. Also works well in the pick and roll both as a screener and finishing at the rim. Snatches rebounds with his extremely strong hands. Shot blocking presence that he even showed swatting a jump shot. Top 3 2018 NBA pick.
SG Gary Trent (Prolific Prep, CA – Duke)
Trent is one of the truly elite scoring wings in this class. At 6’5” the Duke commit showed us more to his game especially on the defensive end. Locked in on that end of the floor creating multiple turnovers that he took the other way. Played with a high motor. Everything he does is crisp. Plus shooter especially from mid-range. Lethal scoring potential out of Trent!
