McDonalds: Monday Practice Standouts
PrepHoops Network was in the building for the Monday morning practice at the McDonald’s High School All-American Games. Here is our breakdown of the standout performers from the competitive practice!
C Mohamed Bamba (Westtown School, PA)
Bamba was completely dominant in the Monday practice at Quest. The 6’11” center took control of the game on both ends of the floor. Defensively he blocked everything that came in the lane with his insane wingspan. Covers so much ground with his quickness and mobility in the paint. Will be an impact shot blocker in college and in the NBA. Offensively he dunked with authority throughout the day. Didn’t matter if it was post moves, dump offs, lobs, or tip ins. He slammed them over and over. Most impressive was when he caught a lob from Wendell Carter and finished with a reverse. Skill level still evolving, but his athleticism and physical tools are out of this world!
SG Lonnie Walker (Reading, PA – Miami)
Walker is a 6’4” shooting guard that has the ability to score with ease. He is particularly effective shooting it from three. Worked well around screens pulling up behind them for triples. Also can play above the rim as a slasher. Was impressed with what he did as a passer from the off guard position.
PG Quade Green (Neumann Goretti, PA – Kentucky)
The Kentucky commit was outstanding going head to head with Trevon Duval. Green stands at 6’1” with solid strength. He is an outstanding mid-range shooter from 15-18 feet off the bounce. Works well around screens and pulls up with balance, elevation, and pure mechanics. Everything he does is crisp. Good ball handler that pushes it in the open floor and always has his head up looking to make a play. Explosive passer that makes both the spectacular and simple pass effectively.
SF Kevin Knox (Tampa Catholic, FL)
Knox is a big wing at 6’8” with a long and lanky frame. Projectable body with a fluid game. He can really shoot the ball from the perimeter. Clean shot with deep range from three point territory. Hits them both off the bounce and the catch. Good feel for knowing how and where to get his shot off. Smooth handles and long strides give him the opportunity to be a quality slasher at the college level and beyond. Had a couple nice plays on the defensive end including one where he got a steal and big transition dunk.
C Brandon McCoy (Cathedral Catholic, CA)
McCoy was outstanding. He more than held his own against top ranked DeAndre Ayton. The 6’11” center moves tremendously well for his size. Skilled moves on the block make him very intriguing at the NBA level. He also plays well in the pick and roll finishing with athleticism at the rim several times in that area. Also flashed some face up skill with a mid-range jumper. Runs the floor great for his size! Made a major impact on Monday!
SG Collin Sexton (Pebblebrook, GA – Alabama)
Sexton can flat out score it! The 6’3” shooting guard is a strong and athletic guard with an explosive first step. Consistently blew by his opponent getting in the lane. Best attacking off the bounce. When he gets a head of steam behind him he is dominant as a finisher at the rim. Pushes it in transition. Sound pull up jumper especially from mid-range. Finds guys in the paint as a distributor from the off guard position.
C DeAndre Ayton (Hillcrest, AZ – Arizona)
Ayton stands at 7’0” with a strong build. He came on strong toward the end of practice. The Arizona commit plays with physicality on the block. Skill down on the block with his hook shot being a lethal weapon! Active offensive rebounder that got on the glass for second chance points throughout the practice. Has face up skills for sure, but he is dominant around the hoop!
SF Jarred Vanderbilt (Victory Prep, TX – Kentucky)
We have always been huge fans of Vanderbilt. The 6’8” point forward has an extremely versatile game. That type of game plays well in a setting like this. Elite passer especially in the open floor. Tremendous vision and feel for finding teammates. His ability to grab a defensive rebound, take it coast to coast, and being a playmaker really stands out. The jump shot has always been one of his weaknesses. Shoots it well from a form standpoint and he knocked down threes at a good clip in the practice. If he can get this to go down consistently he will be and NBA lottery pick.
